Yamagata Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Yamagata — bilingual guide for travelers.

Yamagata has some of the most cinematic onsen in Japan. At Ginzan, a tight row of three- and four-storey wooden ryokan from the 1920s lines a small river and glows by gaslight at dusk — a scene made famous nationwide as a location for the TV drama "Oshin." Up in the mountains, Zao's bath houses sit among the "snow monsters," whole fir trees encased in wind-driven ice. Add the castle-town baths of Kaminoyama, the shogi-piece town of Tendo, and the 1,200-year cure village of Hijiori deep in the snow country, and this is the prefecture where Japanese aesthetics, onsen culture, and deep-snow winters fuse most completely.

Ginzan is one of the most photographed onsen streets in Japan. It grew up beside the Nobesawa silver mine — among the country's richest in the early Edo period, and the source of its name ("silver mountain") — and when the silver gave out the town reinvented itself around the springs. A tight double row of three- and four-storey wooden ryokan from the Taisho era (1912–26) faces across a narrow river, and at dusk gas lamps flicker on along the cobblestones. The town was a location for the beloved 1983 TV drama "Oshin," and its snow-laden winter evenings have an atmosphere many compare to the bathhouse world of "Spirited Away."

  • Taisho-era wooden ryokan, almost unchanged since 1920s
  • Gas-lit cobblestone street at dusk
  • Winter snow scenes are world-famous

Note: Ryokan book out 6–12 months ahead for winter weekends. Day trips are easier but you miss the night atmosphere.

Zao Onsen sits high in the mountains at about 880m, with a history that legend traces back some 1,900 years to a retainer of the hero Yamato Takeru. Its water is a strongly acidic sulfur spring (around pH 1.3–1.6), among the most acidic in Japan and long prized as a "beauty bath." In deepest winter the slopes above fill with "juhyou" — fir trees so plastered by wind-driven snow and ice that they become ghostly white "snow monsters," floodlit at night and reached by ropeway. The town is also one of Japan's great ski resorts, and the open-air "Zao Dai-Rotemburo," set among the trees by a mountain stream, can hold up to two hundred bathers.

  • World-famous "snow monsters" (juhyou) in January–February
  • Zao Dai-Rotemburo — 200-person outdoor bath

Kaminoyama has been an onsen since 1458, when, the story goes, a monk named Gesshu watched a crane bathe its injured leg in the water and fly off healed — so the springs were first called "Tsuru-hagi-no-Yu," the crane's-shin bath. It grew into a castle-and-post town on the old highway, and today the reconstructed white keep of Kaminoyama Castle looks down over preserved samurai quarters and several distinct onsen districts. The faintly cobalt-blue, salty water is known as a gentle "beauty bath," and a handful of free neighbourhood bathhouses and footbaths scattered through the streets make for an enjoyable wander. The town is also closely tied to the great poet Saito Mokichi, who grew up nearby.

  • 560-year onsen history
  • Five free public bath houses ("kyodo-yu")
  • Reconstructed Kaminoyama Castle overlooks the town

Tendo is at once a relaxed hot-spring town (first tapped in 1911) and the capital of Japanese chess: more than ninety-five percent of the country's wooden shogi pieces are carved here. Every April the town stages its famous "Ningen Shogi" — a living chess game played on a hillside board with people in full samurai armour as the pieces. The onsen makes an easy base for the cliffside temple of Yamadera, where the poet Basho wrote his most famous haiku, and in June the surrounding orchards fill with the cherries (sakuranbo) for which Yamagata is celebrated.

Hidden deep in the mountains of central Yamagata, on the eastern rim of a two-kilometre volcanic caldera, Hijiori has been a cure-stay onsen since 807 AD. Its name — "broken elbow" — comes from a legend that a travelling priest healed his fractured arm in the water on the advice of an old monk. It sits in one of the heaviest-snow zones in Japan, where winter drifts easily top three metres, and its morning market, held along the street from spring to autumn, has run in much the same form for over a century — farmers laying out vegetables and pickles in front of the old wooden inns at first light. Few places preserve the unhurried world of the traditional toji town so completely.

  • 1200 years as a "toji" (healing-stay) onsen
  • Daily morning market — a living tradition
  • One of Japan's heaviest-snow regions

Insider Tips for Yamagata

Know before you go

Book Ginzan Way Ahead for Winter

For winter weekends with snow, book Ginzan ryokan 6–12 months ahead. If full, consider day-tripping from Yamagata City (1.5 hours) — but you'll miss the gas-lit evening atmosphere that makes the town iconic.

Zao Juhyou Season is Short

The famous "snow monsters" only fully form from late December to early March, peaking in February. The ropeway tour to Juhyou-Genso (Snow Monster Plateau) is a must — book on a clear day for the best photos.

Don't Skip Yamadera Temple

Risshakuji Temple (Yamadera) — 1015 stone steps up a cliff to mountain temples Basho wrote haiku about — is about 20 min by train from Yamagata City (slightly longer from Tendo). Easy to combine with any Yamagata onsen stay.

Eat Imoni in Autumn

Yamagata's "imoni" (taro hotpot) is a fall tradition. Many ryokan serve it as a seasonal feature dish, and the Imoni-kai (potluck-style imoni party along riverbanks) takes place across Yamagata in September–October.

Try Cherry Picking in June

Yamagata produces about 75% of Japan's cherries (sakuranbo). June is peak harvest — many Tendo/Kaminoyama ryokan offer cherry-picking experiences as an add-on, with all-you-can-eat sessions in the orchards.

Travel Essentials

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Yamagata onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Ginzan Onsen really "Spirited Away"?

Studio Ghibli has never officially confirmed it, but the wooden ryokan, gas lamps, and bridge-over-water layout strongly resemble the film's onsen. Even if not the literal source, the atmosphere is unmistakably similar.

When can I see the Zao "snow monsters"?

Late December through early March, with peak conditions in February. The Juhyou Light-Up (illumination) runs evenings in February — book the ropeway tour separately. Clear winter days give the best photos.

How do I get to Yamagata onsen from Tokyo?

Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo Station: 2.5 hours to Yamagata or Tendo, about 3.5 hours to Shinjo (for Ginzan/Hijiori transfers). Direct routes are easy — no rental car needed for Ginzan, Zao, Tendo, Kaminoyama. Hijiori requires bus from Shinjo.
