"Japan's Three Oldest" — Emperor Saimei's 658 AD bath

Shirahama is one of Japan's "Three Oldest Onsen" (with Arima and Dogo), formally recorded in the 8th-century Nihon Shoki when Empress Saimei and Crown Prince Naka-no-Oe visited in 658 AD. The town wraps around Shirarahama — a 620m crescent of dazzling white silica sand (one of Japan's top-rated beaches). Iconic Sandanbeki (200m sheer cliffs) and Senjojiki ("thousand tatami") flat-rock platform are within walking distance. The "Sakino-yu" historic public bath sits literally on the coastal rocks where waves crash just feet away. 白浜温泉は「日本三古湯」（有馬・道後と並ぶ）の一つで、8世紀「日本書紀」に658年斉明天皇と中大兄皇子の行幸記録が公式に残る、日本温泉史最古級の地。街は名所「白良浜」（620mの三日月形の真っ白なシリカ砂海岸、日本トップクラスのビーチ）を囲みます。200mの絶壁「三段壁」と「千畳敷」（千畳分の広さの平岩）が徒歩圏。共同浴場「崎の湯」は海岸の岩の上に建ち、波が数mの距離で砕ける絶景の湯。現在50軒以上の旅館、アドベンチャーワールド（マリンパーク）、東京直行便のある南紀白浜空港もある近代温泉地。大阪から特急くろしおで2時間30分。

World's only UNESCO-designated onsen — "Tsubo-yu" private bath

世界唯一の世界遺産温泉「つぼ湯」、1800年の聖湯

Yunomine Onsen is the world's only hot spring formally designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site — registered in 2004 as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" cultural heritage. Yunomine has a 1,800-year origin legend (discovered by a Buddhist hermit in the 4th century AD), and was the purification bath for medieval pilgrims walking the Kumano-Kodo to Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine. The most famous bath is "Tsubo-yu" — a tiny 2-person rock-cut tub at the edge of a stream, available by 30-min slot for ¥800. The water color changes seven times daily depending on temperature and minerals. About 10 small ryokan operate in the tiny mountain valley.

湯の峰温泉は世界で唯一、世界遺産に正式登録された温泉浴場——2004年「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」（文化遺産）の構成資産として登録されました。1800年前（4世紀）仏教の隠者が発見したと伝わる起源を持ち、中世以来「熊野詣で」（熊野本宮大社への巡礼）の参拝者の身を清める「みそぎの湯」として尊ばれてきました。最も有名な「つぼ湯」は川辺の岩に刻まれた2人用の小さな湯壺で、30分単位の貸切利用（800円）。湯色が一日に七度変わると言い伝えられています。山あいの小さな谷に約10軒の旅館。

Dig your own bath in the riverbed + winter's "Sennin-buro"

河原を掘って自分の湯を作る、冬の名物「仙人風呂」

Kawayu Onsen is one of the most singular hot springs in Japan — the springs rise directly through the gravel bed of the Oto River, and bathers can excavate their own personal hot pool with a shovel from the ryokan, fed by 73°C water bubbling up from below. From December to February the river volume drops and the village dams a section to create "Sennin-buro" (Hermit's Bath) — a 1,000-person-capacity natural rock pool, free and open 24 hours. The other half of the year, the spring is only accessible by riverside excavation. Located deep in the Kii mountains near Kumano Hongu Taisha. About 10 ryokan + numerous campsites. Close to Yunomine — 5 min by car.

川湯温泉は日本でも特異な温泉——大塔川の砂利の川底から温泉が直接湧出し、入浴者は旅館で借りたスコップで自分専用の湯壺を河原に掘ります（73°Cで湧出）。12月〜2月の渇水期には集落が川の一部を堰き止め、1000人収容の天然岩風呂「仙人風呂」を作ります（無料・24時間開放）。それ以外の季節は河原掘り入浴が主な楽しみ方。熊野本宮大社の近く、紀伊山地の奥深い場所。約10軒の旅館+キャンプ場多数。湯の峰から車5分。

Katsuura Onsen sits near the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, perched on a headland facing the open Pacific Ocean. The town's defining feature is "Bouki-do" (忘帰洞) — a massive natural cave open to the sea, converted into a hot spring bath that's been described as "the most dramatic onsen in Japan." The cave's name means "Cave That Makes You Forget to Go Home" — coined by Tokugawa Yorimichi of the Kii clan in 1921 after a bath. Katsuura is also home to Japan's largest tuna fishing port — the dawn auction is open to visitors. Nachi-no-Taki (Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall, 133m, sacred to Kumano) is 20 min away. "Japan's Three Beauty Waters" — Kobo Daishi origin (8th c)

日本三美人湯、弘法大師ゆかりの龍神村の湯

Ryujin Onsen is one of "Japan's Three Beauty Waters" (alongside Kawanaka Onsen in Gunma and Yunokawa Onsen in Shimane) — known for waters so soft and skin-conditioning that bathers reportedly emerge with visibly silky skin. The hot spring was said to be discovered by Kobo Daishi (founder of Shingon Buddhism) in the 9th century, then formally developed by the Tokugawa clan of Kii as their official bath retreat in the Edo period. The village is in a deep, narrow valley of the Hidaka River, with about 10 traditional ryokan tucked into the mountainside. Located within the deep mountains of Wakayama; accessing requires a 1.5h drive from Tanabe Station on the coast.

龍神温泉は「日本三美人湯」（群馬の川中、島根の湯の川と並ぶ）の一つ——湯が極めて柔らかく、入浴後の肌が目に見えて絹のように滑らかになると言われる名湯。9世紀に弘法大師が発見し、江戸時代には紀州徳川家が「藩主御用達」として正式整備しました。村は日高川の深く狭い渓谷の奥に位置し、約10軒の伝統旅館が山腹に佇みます。和歌山の山奥深くにあり、田辺駅（海岸）から車で1時間半を要する秘境感。
