Tokyo Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Tokyo — bilingual guide for travelers.

Tokyo is far more than a megacity. The metropolis runs from the forested gorges of Okutama in the west out across the Pacific to the volcanic Izu Islands — Izu Oshima just 120 km offshore, subtropical Hachijojima some 290 km south (and, counting its remotest islets, Tokyo stretches almost 1,800 km north to south). That sprawl gives the capital a surprising spread of genuine natural hot springs: gorge baths fed by the Tama River, an onsen built right into the exit of the world's most-climbed mountain, and free seaside volcanic baths on islands two hours from the city pier. "Tokyo onsen" is far richer than almost any visitor expects.

In the far western reaches of the metropolis, Okutama is a world of cedar forests, deep gorges, and the clear headwaters of the Tama River — the source of much of Tokyo's drinking water, held back by the great Lake Okutama (Ogouchi Reservoir). The flagship day-use bath, "Okutama Moegi-no-Yu," is perched over Hikawa Gorge, its open-air pool looking straight down onto the turquoise river. Pair it with a riverside walk, the limestone Nippara caverns, or a hike up Mt. Mitake — all barely 90 minutes from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo and Ome lines. It is the easiest place near the city to feel you have left it entirely.

  • Hikawa Gorge views from the open-air bath
  • 90 min from Shinjuku — Tokyo's easiest mountain escape
  • Mt. Mitake and Lake Okutama nearby

Mitake Gorge is the stretch of the Tama River around Mitake and Sawai stations that Tokyo's paddlers call home — one of the best kayaking, rafting, and SUP runs near the capital, busy with wetsuits from spring to autumn. Above the water rises sacred Mt. Mitake, reached by cable car to the thousand-year-old Musashi-Mitake Shrine and a hamlet of pilgrim lodges (shukubo) among giant cedars. After a day on the river, riverside hotels and the nearby natural spring "Kabe Onsen Ume-no-Yu" in Ome offer a warm soak. It makes a perfect outdoor-plus-onsen day-trip, about 75 minutes from Shinjuku.

Mt. Takao (599m) is the most-climbed mountain on Earth — about three million people a year — and in 2007 it earned three stars in the Michelin Green Guide alongside Mt. Fuji. Right at the foot, built into the exit of Takaosan-guchi Station on the Keio Line, sits "Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu": indoor and open-air pools of gentle, skin-softening alkaline water, ideal for soaking tired legs the moment you come off the trail. With Shinjuku just 50 minutes away and English signage throughout, it is the single easiest "real onsen" experience for a first-time visitor to Tokyo.

  • Direct from Takaosan-guchi Station — no walking
  • Perfect post-hike soak after Mt. Takao climb
  • 50 min back to Shinjuku via Keio Line

Izu Oshima is Tokyo's nearest island — about two hours by jet ferry from Takeshiba Pier, roughly 120 km out. At its heart is the active volcano Mt. Mihara (758m), revered for centuries as "Gojinka-sama" (the sacred fire) for the glow of its eruptions; the year-round "Gojinka Onsen" takes its name from it. The island's signature soak is the seaside "Hama-no-Yu" at Motomachi, a celebrated open-air mixed bath where you watch the sun sink into the Pacific (and Mt. Fuji on clear days). From January to March some three million wild camellias bloom — the source of the island's famous tsubaki oil and its long-running Camellia Festival.

  • 2 hours from Tokyo by jet ferry
  • Open-air "Hama-no-Yu" bath on black-sand beach
  • February camellia festival — 3 million blossoms

Note: Hama-no-Yu is open-air mixed-gender; bring a bath wrap.

Hachijojima lies some 290 km south of Tokyo Bay, yet is still part of Tokyo Metropolis — a subtropical island of two volcanoes (the elegant Hachijo-Fuji, 854m, and Mt. Mihara), tree-fern jungle, and a string of geothermal public baths around the coast. Highlights include the free, jungle-set "Uramigataki Onsen" beside a waterfall, and "Sueyoshi Onsen Miharashi-no-Yu," whose open-air pool seems to spill toward the ocean horizon; most cost ¥500 or nothing at all. Reach the island in about 55 minutes by flight from Haneda, or on an overnight ferry (roughly 10 hours) — a true subtropical escape that is, incredibly, still Tokyo.

  • 6 geothermal public baths around the coast
  • Most baths free or ¥500 — extremely accessible
  • Subtropical Tokyo — beach + onsen + jungle

Hours and prices vary — always confirm on the official site before visiting.

Tokyo Onsen After a Day in the City

Many Tokyo visitors don't realize there are real onsen within day-trip reach. After 2 days of Shibuya/Shinjuku exploration, take a day for Takao Onsen (50 min) or Okutama (90 min) — the contrast is medicinal.

Take a Ferry to Oshima

The Tokai Kisen jet ferry from Takeshiba Pier reaches Oshima in just 2 hours — much closer than people realize. Day trips are technically possible, but staying overnight at a beachside ryokan with onsen is the genuine experience.

Hachijojima Onsen Loop

You can tour several of Hachijojima's coastal public baths in a single day. Rent a car and drive the loop (about 1.5 hours total). The island's footbaths are a fine spot to relax with a cold drink after.

Combine Mt. Takao with Shinjuku Dinner

Hike Mt. Takao morning (1-3 hours depending on route), bath at Gokurakuyu afternoon (¥1100), Keio Line back to Shinjuku for dinner. The complete day costs under ¥3000 in transport. The most efficient nature day from Tokyo.

Avoid Crowded Weekends

Takao and Okutama can be crowded on weekends, especially during foliage (mid-November) and cherry blossom seasons (early April). Weekday mornings are best for both. Oshima/Hachijojima don't suffer this problem.

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Tokyo onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.
