Tochigi Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Tochigi — bilingual guide for travelers.

Tochigi is one of the most onsen-rich prefectures in Japan, and it wraps that wealth around the World Heritage shrines of Nikko. Kinugawa, once reserved for the monks and lords who came to worship at Nikko, lines a dramatic gorge two hours from Asakusa; Nasu Yumoto, found in 630 AD when a hunter tracked a wounded deer to the spring, is the oldest onsen in the prefecture; Shiobara scatters eleven hot-spring hamlets through a foliage-bright valley; and Nikko Yumoto sits at 1,500m beside an alpine lake, milky with sulfur. Add quiet Kawaji at the meeting of two rivers, and you have one of Honshu's richest combinations of hot springs and heritage.

Kinugawa has been one of the Kanto region's most popular onsen towns since the Edo period, when its waters, deep in the gorge, were reserved for the monks and feudal lords making the pilgrimage to nearby Nikko; only after the Meiji era did it open to all. Today high-rise ryokan and hotels line the dramatic Kinugawa Gorge, and the town makes the natural base for the UNESCO World Heritage shrines of Nikko, half an hour away, as well as theme parks like Edo Wonderland and Tobu World Square. The Tobu Limited Express runs direct from Asakusa in about two hours.

Nasu Yumoto is the oldest onsen in Tochigi, said to have been found in 630 AD when a local official chasing a wounded white deer was led to a spring where the animal was healing its arrow-wound — a story still honoured at the Nasu Onsen Shrine he founded. Nearly fourteen centuries on, the sulfurous water still pours through the wonderful old wooden "Shika-no-Yu" (Deer Bath), a ¥500 public bath with six pools at staggered temperatures. The town sits among the Nasu Highlands, beside the eerie "Sessho-seki," the "killing stone" of the nine-tailed-fox legend, and not far from the Imperial Summer Villa, with family attractions all around.

Shiobara is a whole constellation of hot springs — the "Shiobara Eleven," eleven hamlets such as Oami, Fukuwata, Hatori, Furumachi, Arayu, and Motoyu, fed by around 150 sources strung along the Hoki River gorge. Its oldest, Motoyu, dates to 806 AD, and each hamlet has its own water and mood, from clear simple springs to milky sulfur. The valley has drawn writers since the Meiji era — the novelist Ozaki Koyo wrote part of "Konjiki Yasha" at an inn here — and its autumn colour is famous, best seen from the scarlet "Beni-no-Tsuribashi" suspension bridge in late October. Buy a bath-hopping token and you can soak your way along the gorge.

Discovered in 788 AD by the monk Shodo Shonin — the same priest who opened Nikko itself — Nikko Yumoto lies at 1,500m on the northern shore of the alpine Lake Yunoko, ringed by the peaks of Mt. Shirane and Mt. Onsen-ga-take. Its strongly sulfurous water runs milky white, and the little Onsenji temple here, a branch of the World Heritage Rinnoji, still lets pilgrims bathe before the healing Buddha. All around lies the loveliest of Oku-Nikko — the Senjogahara marshes, the thundering Yudaki Falls, and Lake Chuzenji — making it a perfect higher-altitude finish to the Toshogu shrine route.

A few minutes upstream from Kinugawa, Kawaji is its quieter sibling, set where the Ojika and Kinu rivers meet in a small gorge. It is said to have been found in the early 1700s when the Ojika flooded and revealed the spring, and it has been a cure bath ever since — "for cuts, Kawaji; for burns, the falls," runs the old saying about its gentle, wound-soothing water. Less crowded and more intimate than its famous neighbour, it shares the same easy direct access on the Tobu Line from Asakusa, and the dramatic Ryuokyo gorge is close by.

  • 400 years as a "complete healing" onsen
  • Quieter alternative to nearby Kinugawa
  • Foliage views along the confluence of two rivers

Insider Tips for Tochigi

Know before you go

Pair Onsen with Nikko Shrines

Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage shrines (Toshogu, Futarasan, Rinno-ji) are within 30 minutes of all 5 onsen areas. Allow a full day for the shrines + Tosho-gu Treasure Hall, then unwind at Kinugawa, Kawaji, or Nikko Yumoto.

Iroha-zaka Foliage Drive

The Iroha-zaka winding road connects central Nikko to Oku-Nikko (Lake Chuzenji, Yumoto). The 48 hairpin turns in fiery foliage (mid-October to early November) are unforgettable. Expect heavy traffic — leave at sunrise for the best experience.

Try Yuba in Nikko

Nikko's "yuba" (tofu skin) is a centuries-old monastery delicacy. Many Kinugawa and Nikko Yumoto ryokan serve elaborate yuba multi-course dinners. Yuba is exceptionally photo-friendly and a gentler protein for vegetarians.

Shiobara 11-Bath Walking Tour

Shiobara has 11 sub-onsen towns within walking distance of each other. Buy a multi-bath pass ("Yumeguri-tegata") at any participating ryokan and walk between them all day. A quintessential Japanese onsen pilgrimage experience.

Avoid Golden Week & Foliage Weekends

Kinugawa and Nasu fill up completely during Golden Week, summer school holidays, and peak foliage weekends. Aim for weekdays in May–June, September, or mid-November for fewer crowds with equal beauty.

Travel Essentials

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Tochigi onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Best way to combine Nikko shrines with onsen?

Stay 2 nights minimum: Day 1 evening at Kinugawa/Kawaji (relax), Day 2 visit Toshogu shrines + Iroha-zaka, evening soak at Nikko Yumoto. Day 3 explore Oku-Nikko (Senjogahara, Yudaki Falls) before heading home.

Can I day-trip from Tokyo?

Kinugawa and Kawaji are doable but rushed — 4 hours of travel for 4 hours of soaking. Nikko Yumoto requires longer transit. We recommend at least 1 overnight to fully appreciate the area.

Are baths tattoo-friendly?

Large Kinugawa hotels and modern Nasu resorts often allow tattoos, especially in private baths. Traditional smaller ryokan in Shiobara/Nasu Yumoto/Kawaji generally do not. Always confirm in advance.
