Atami is among the most accessible major onsen cities in Japan — just 35 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, one of the world's most convenient hot spring getaways. Atami has been famous since the 8th century when, by legend, a hot spring erupted from the sea — the name literally means "hot sea." Today the city stretches along a steep coastal bowl, with ryokan terracing up the hillsides and Sagami Bay views from nearly every bath. The Atami Plum Garden, MOA Museum of Art, and January cherry blossoms (Atami-zakura) make it a year-round destination.

  • A leading onsen city, favored by the Tokugawa shoguns

Ito boasts approximately 750 individual hot spring sources — among the most of any town in Japan, after Beppu — and a 1,300-year history of bathing. The town spreads across the Matsukawa river estuary on Izu's east coast, with ryokan ranging from intimate to opulent. Tanizaki Junichiro, Kawabata Yasunari, and other literary giants made it their writing retreat. The wooden 1928 Tokaikan ryokan (now a museum) preserves the golden age of Ito hot spring architecture. From Tokyo: about 1h 40min via the Odoriko limited express, direct from Tokyo Station.

Shuzenji is the oldest hot spring on the Izu Peninsula — said to have been discovered by Kobo Daishi (the founder of Shingon Buddhism) in 807 AD. The town sits along the Katsura river in the mountainous heart of Izu, with the riverside "Tokko no Yu" marking the legendary origin spot (today preserved for viewing rather than bathing). Around it stand Shuzenji temple, a stunning bamboo grove walk, and the red-lacquered Katsurabashi bridge. November transforms the maples to crimson; Natsume Soseki nearly died here in 1910 (the famous "Shuzenji Incident") and later wrote about it. Easily reached via the Izu Hakone Railway from Mishima Shinkansen station.

Shimoda is the historic port at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula — opened to Commodore Perry's "Black Ships" under the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, one of the first two ports to welcome the West. The town's onsen district includes Rendaiji Onsen (where Yoshida Shoin reportedly soaked while plotting his attempt to stow away on Perry's ships) and the modern coastal hotels of Shirahama Beach. The contrast between Edo-period port history, white-sand swimming beaches, and quiet hot springs makes Shimoda unique. June brings the famous Hydrangea Festival (Mt. Shimoda — 150,000 plants). Reach via Odoriko express from Tokyo (2h 45min).

Kawazu is the village on Izu's east coast where Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata set his 1926 masterpiece "The Izu Dancer" — a coming-of-age story walked from station to station, ryokan to ryokan, that became Japan's most beloved short novel. Each February the town celebrates with the Kawazu-zakura Festival, when 8,000 of Japan's earliest-blooming pink cherry trees line the Kawazu River for 4 km — drawing 1+ million visitors annually. Inland from Kawazu lies Kawazu Nanadaru ("seven waterfalls"), a hot-spring valley made famous in the novel. Quiet, photogenic, and full of literary atmosphere.

Insider Tips for Shizuoka

Know before you go

Atami by Shinkansen — Day Trip is Real

Atami is one of the few major onsen in Japan you can truly day-trip from Tokyo. Shinkansen "Kodama" runs every 15 minutes (35 min from Tokyo, ¥4,000 one-way). Many ryokan offer "day-use plans" (¥3,000–¥6,000) — bath + private room + lunch — perfect for a half-day escape. Aim to arrive by 10am, leave by 5pm.

Use the JR Odoriko / Saphir Odoriko Limited Express

For Ito, Atagawa, Kawazu, and Shimoda (which are NOT on the Shinkansen line), the JR limited express "Odoriko" or premium "Saphir Odoriko" runs from Tokyo Station direct. Saphir has all-Green-Car luxury seats with ocean views — book 1 month in advance for best seats. Tokyo → Shimoda is 2h 45min.

February: Kawazu Cherries are Earlier than Tokyo

Most travelers don't know — Japan's first cherry blossoms aren't in Tokyo or Kyoto, but Kawazu. The "Kawazu-zakura" cherry variety blooms in early-to-mid February (3–4 weeks before Somei-yoshino). 8,000 trees lining the Kawazu River turn the valley deep pink. Weekday afternoons are quietest. Lit up at night Feb 10–28.

Mt. Fuji from the Bath — West-Coast Izu

For Mt. Fuji views from the bath, head to Izu's WEST coast — Heda, Toi, and Dogashima face Suruga Bay with Mt. Fuji rising directly across the water. Sunset baths here are spectacular. The east coast (Atami, Ito) faces Sagami Bay and doesn't see Fuji.

Shuzenji Tokko no Yu — Free Footbath at the Origin

In the middle of the Katsura river in central Shuzenji stands "Tokko no Yu" — the legendary 9th-century origin spot of Izu onsen, said to have erupted from rock struck by Kobo Daishi's tokko (Buddhist scepter). Today it is preserved as a riverside landmark for viewing (bathing is no longer permitted), with free public footbaths nearby. Peak atmosphere just after sunset.

Travel Essentials

Plan your trip

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Shizuoka onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Atami or Hakone for first-time visit?

Hakone for variety (17 onsen districts, museums, Mt. Fuji views, Lake Ashi). Atami for speed (35-min Shinkansen, day-trip possible) and an old-school onsen city feel with sea views. If you have 2 nights, do Hakone. If you have a single overnight or just a day, Atami wins on access.

How long to spend on the Izu Peninsula?

1 night = Atami only. 2 nights = Atami + Shuzenji or Ito. 3 nights = a proper Izu loop: Atami → Shuzenji → Shimoda → Kawazu (or rent a car for full peninsula access). Shimoda and Kawazu require deeper commitment as they're 2.5+ hours from Tokyo by train.

Are tattoos accepted in Izu onsen?

Mixed — large hotels often allow tattoos in private (kashikiri) baths or with a sticker cover. Public baths and traditional ryokan more often refuse. Check ryokan websites for "tattoo-friendly" or book a "kashikiri" private bath option. Some Izu spas (like Atami Ginza area sento) accept all.
