Atami is among the most accessible major onsen cities in Japan — just 35 minutes from Tokyo Station by Shinkansen, one of the world's most convenient hot spring getaways. Atami has been famous since the 8th century when, by legend, a hot spring erupted from the sea — the name literally means "hot sea." Today the city stretches along a steep coastal bowl, with ryokan terracing up the hillsides and Sagami Bay views from nearly every bath. The Atami Plum Garden, MOA Museum of Art, and January cherry blossoms (Atami-zakura) make it a year-round destination.

Izu's east coast — 750 springs, literary legacy

伊豆東海岸の老舗、750本の源泉と文豪の湯

Ito boasts approximately 750 individual hot spring sources — among the most of any town in Japan, after Beppu — and a 1,300-year history of bathing. The town spreads across the Matsukawa river estuary on Izu's east coast, with ryokan ranging from intimate to opulent. Tanizaki Junichiro, Kawabata Yasunari, and other literary giants made it their writing retreat. The wooden 1928 Tokaikan ryokan (now a museum) preserves the golden age of Ito hot spring architecture. From Tokyo: about 1h 40min via the Odoriko limited express, direct from Tokyo Station.

Izu's "Little Kyoto" — 1200 years, bamboo grove + crimson maples

伊豆の小京都、1200年の湯と竹林・紅葉

Shuzenji is the oldest hot spring on the Izu Peninsula — said to have been discovered by Kobo Daishi (the founder of Shingon Buddhism) in 807 AD. The town sits along the Katsura river in the mountainous heart of Izu, with the riverside "Tokko no Yu" marking the legendary origin spot (today preserved for viewing rather than bathing). Around it stand Shuzenji temple, a stunning bamboo grove walk, and the red-lacquered Katsurabashi bridge. November transforms the maples to crimson; Natsume Soseki nearly died here in 1910 (the famous "Shuzenji Incident") and later wrote about it. Easily reached via the Izu Hakone Railway from Mishima Shinkansen station.

修善寺温泉は伊豆半島最古の温泉で、807年に弘法大師が発見したと伝わる1200年の古湯。伊豆半島中央の桂川沿いに位置し、川中の「独鈷の湯」が伝説の起源地（現在は入浴不可の見学スポット）。修禅寺、竹林の小径、朱塗りの桂橋など散策の見どころが集約。11月は紅葉が川面を染め、夏目漱石は1910年この地で大病を患い（修善寺の大患）、後にその体験を綴りました。三島駅から伊豆箱根鉄道で約35分。

Izu's southern tip — Black Ships harbor + white-sand beaches

伊豆最南端、黒船来航の港町と白浜の海岸温泉

Shimoda is the historic port at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula — opened to Commodore Perry's "Black Ships" under the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, one of the first two ports to welcome the West. The town's onsen district includes Rendaiji Onsen (where Yoshida Shoin reportedly soaked while plotting his attempt to stow away on Perry's ships) and the modern coastal hotels of Shirahama Beach. The contrast between Edo-period port history, white-sand swimming beaches, and quiet hot springs makes Shimoda unique. June brings the famous Hydrangea Festival (Mt. Shimoda — 150,000 plants). Reach via Odoriko express from Tokyo (2h 45min).

伊豆半島最南端の港町・下田。1854年の日米和親条約で開港し、日本が西洋に開いた最初の港のひとつです。温泉地区は蓮台寺温泉（吉田松陰がペリー艦への密航を企てる直前に潜伏し湯治したと伝わる）と、白浜海岸沿いのモダンなリゾートホテル群が並びます。江戸末期の歴史、白砂のビーチ、静かな温泉、この組合せは下田だけ。6月の下田公園あじさい祭り（15万株）も名物。東京から特急踊り子号で2時間45分。

「伊豆の踊子」の舞台、日本一早咲きの桜

Kawazu is the village on Izu's east coast where Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata set his 1926 masterpiece "The Izu Dancer" — a coming-of-age story walked from station to station, ryokan to ryokan, that became Japan's most beloved short novel. Each February the town celebrates with the Kawazu-zakura Festival, when 8,000 of Japan's earliest-blooming pink cherry trees line the Kawazu River for 4 km — drawing 1+ million visitors annually. Inland from Kawazu lies Kawazu Nanadaru ("seven waterfalls"), a hot-spring valley made famous in the novel. Quiet, photogenic, and full of literary atmosphere.

河津温泉は、ノーベル賞作家・川端康成の名作「伊豆の踊子」（1926年）の舞台となった伊豆東海岸の村。少年が踊り子と出会い旅をする青春小説は日本人なら誰もが知る名篇です。2月の河津桜祭りでは、日本一早咲きの河津桜約8000本が河津川沿い約4kmに咲き誇り、年間100万人を集めます。内陸の河津七滝（ななだる）は小説に登場する温泉郷の絶景。峰温泉大噴湯（100℃の湯を30m噴き上げる温泉間欠泉）も名物。文学的雰囲気と桜の名所が同居する稀有な温泉地。
