Tamatsukuri Onsen is one of Japan's oldest documented hot springs — formally recorded in the 733 AD "Izumo Fudoki" (Records of Izumo Province), which describes it as a bath where "one bath makes you beautiful, two baths cure all ailments." This 1,300-year reputation as one of Japan's premier beauty waters persists today. The town is named after the magatama jewel-making industry that flourished here in ancient times (the name means "magatama-making"). The Tamayu River runs through center, with about 15 ryokan along the banks. Multiple free footbaths line the river. Walking distance to Tamatsukuri Onsen Shrine (where ancient bathers prayed). Easy day-trip from Izumo Taisha by Limited Express Yakumo.

玉造温泉は日本最古級の温泉のひとつ——733年「出雲国風土記」に正式記録され、「一たび濯げば、形容端正しく、再ば沐すれば、万の病悉に除こる」（一度浸かれば容姿が整い、二度浸かればすべての病が癒える）と記載される、千三百年にわたり名高い美肌の湯。地名は古代「勾玉（まがたま）」造りの産業地だったことに由来。玉湯川が温泉街中心を流れ、川沿いに約15軒の旅館が並びます。複数の無料足湯。古代の入浴者が拝んだ玉作湯神社が徒歩圏。出雲大社からの特急やくもで簡単に日帰り組合せ可能。

World's only UNESCO industrial-heritage onsen (Iwami Ginzan)

世界遺産・石見銀山の港町、世界唯一の産業遺産温泉

Yunotsu Onsen is uniquely the world's only hot spring registered as part of a UNESCO industrial World Heritage Site — inscribed 2007 as part of the "Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape." The mine, active 1526–1923, was once the world's largest single source of silver and supplied roughly 1/3 of global silver during the Tokugawa period. Yunotsu served as the port town shipping the silver — its onsen was the rest-bath for mine workers and merchants. Two ancient public bathhouses still operate: "Motoyu" (oldest, source water + 1300-year tradition) and "Yakushi-yu" (Meiji-era beauty). The narrow port-town streetscape is largely 18th-century. 温泉津温泉は世界で唯一、産業遺産として世界遺産に登録された温泉——2007年「石見銀山遺跡とその文化的景観」の構成資産として登録。石見銀山（1526〜1923年稼働）は世界一の銀生産量を誇り、徳川時代には世界の銀の約3分の1を供給した産業の中心。温泉津はその銀の積出港として機能し、温泉は鉱夫・商人の湯治場でした。古代から続く2つの共同浴場「元湯」（最古、1300年の伝統）と「薬師湯」（明治期の美しい木造）が現役。江戸時代の港町の家並みが今も残ります。8軒程度の旅館+民宿。広島から特急やくも+JRで3時間。

Lake Shinji sunset — "Japan's Top 100 Sunsets" + Matsue Castle

日本の夕日100選の宍道湖、国宝松江城の城下町

Matsue Shinjiko Onsen lines the northeast shore of Lake Shinji — recognized as one of "Japan's Top 100 Sunset Spots" for the iconic golden hour view across the brackish lake. The town also serves as the gateway to Matsue Castle (one of only 12 surviving original castle towers, designated National Treasure 2015), and the historic samurai quarter where Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) lived and wrote "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" (1894). The hot springs were developed in 1971 from deep drilling. About 10 ryokan offer Lake Shinji views from baths. Lake-side promenade with footbaths along the route.

松江しんじ湖温泉は宍道湖の北東岸に広がります——「日本の夕日100選」に選ばれる宍道湖の絶景夕日が看板。国宝・松江城（現存12天守の一つ、2015年国宝指定）の城下町であり、ラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）が住み「知られぬ日本の面影」(1894)を執筆した武家屋敷街の玄関口。湯は1971年深層掘削で開発。約10軒の旅館が宍道湖ビューの湯を提供。湖畔の遊歩道に足湯が点在。

Iwami mountain hamlet — "San'in's little Yufuin" + 3 public baths

石見の山あいの隠れ里、3つの共同浴場

Arifuku is a tiny mountain hamlet onsen in central Shimane, with about 8 traditional ryokan stacked along stone-paved alleys, often compared to a "San'in version of Yufuin." The springs were discovered around 1300 years ago by Buddhist priest Hodo. Three public bathhouses — "Yakushi-yu," "Mikuni-yu," and "Goen-yu" — each have their own architecture and water source, all open to overnight ryokan guests for free. Despite its small size, Arifuku's preserved Showa-era atmosphere has earned national photography awards. From Hamada Station: 25 min by bus.

有福温泉は島根中部の山あいの小さな隠れ里——石畳の路地に約8軒の伝統旅館が連なる「山陰の湯布院」と呼ばれる風情の温泉地。約1300年前に法道仙人が発見したと伝わります。3つの共同浴場「薬師湯」「御前湯」「さつき湯」がそれぞれ独自の建築と源泉を持ち、宿泊客は3湯すべてに無料入浴可能。小規模ながら昭和レトロの保存度で全国写真コンテストに度々登場。浜田駅からバスで25分。

Adachi Museum garden onsen — Japan's #1 garden 22 years running

足立美術館の庭園隣接、22年連続日本一の庭園と温泉

Sagi-no-yu Onsen sits adjacent to the Adachi Museum of Art — voted "Japan's Best Garden" for 22 consecutive years (2003–2024) by the American "Journal of Japanese Gardening." The garden's "borrowed-scenery" landscape using the distant mountains as backdrop is considered the supreme example of Japanese garden art. The onsen ryokan area is small (only 3–4 properties) but the Adachi visit makes it a major travel target. The hot spring is sodium chloride type. From Yonago Station: 30 min by free Adachi shuttle.

鷺の湯温泉は足立美術館に隣接します——アメリカの庭園専門誌「Journal of Japanese Gardening」で22年連続「日本一の庭園」（2003〜2024年）に選ばれ続けている世界的に有名な庭園。遠景の山々を借景に組み込んだ造園美の最高峰として評価されます。温泉地としては小規模（3〜4軒）ですが、足立美術館見学とのセットで主要旅行目的地に。湯は塩化物泉。米子駅から足立美術館の無料シャトルで30分。
