The Chichibu basin is ringed by sacred mountains — Mt. Buko, the half-quarried limestone peak that towers over the town; the wolf-worshipping shrine of Mitsumine; and Mt. Ryokami — and its small ryokan and cold-spring inns sit among them. Chichibu is one of the country's great festival towns: the December Chichibu Night Festival, with its nail-free gilded floats called "moving Yomei Gates," is reckoned one of Japan's three great float festivals and inscribed by UNESCO, climaxing with rare winter fireworks. Come in late April and the hillside of Hitsujiyama Park turns into a carpet of some 400,000 moss-phlox blooms beneath Mt. Buko. The Seibu "Laview" reaches it from Ikebukuro in 80 minutes.

Quiet lakeside onsen 75 minutes from Ikebukuro

飯能市の奥、有間ダム湖畔の隠れ宿

Naguri Onsen lies beside Lake Naguri (the Arima Dam) in the deep forests of Hanno, in western Saitama. Legend dates the spring back some 800 years, to a hunter who watched a wounded deer heal its injuries in the water — and today a single historic ryokan, the Daishokaku, carries that history on, drawing on a gentle radium-bearing cold mineral spring. At about 90 minutes from Ikebukuro by Seibu line and bus, it is among the closest pieces of real countryside to central Tokyo, and the day-use "Sawarabi-no-Yu" bath, lakeside cycling, and the climb up Mt. Bonomine are all close at hand.

Day-use onsen with views of sacred Mt. Buko

霊峰武甲山と春の芝桜を望む日帰り温泉

Buko Onsen is a day-use bath in Yokoze, set right at the foot of Mt. Buko, the 1,304m limestone peak that rises directly behind the outdoor pool — a mountain held sacred by the people of Chichibu even as its north face is slowly quarried for cement. Most visitors come straight from Tokyo, just 80 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Seibu Chichibu Line. The great draw is timing a visit for late April, when nearby Hitsujiyama Park unfurls its famous "shibazakura" — hundreds of thousands of pink and white moss-phlox laid like a carpet against the silhouette of the mountain.

Riverside onsen at the famous boat-tour gorge

ライン下りで有名な渓谷の温泉地

Nagatoro is famous across Japan for its gorge of "Iwadatami" — great flat slabs of crystalline schist, thrust up from deep in the earth and polished by the Arakawa, designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument back in 1924. The classic way to see it is by "Line-kudari," a traditional flat-bottomed boat that shoots the rapids and drifts the calm pools; in winter the boats become heated "kotatsu boats." A handful of ryokan along the river offer gorge-view baths, and the town pairs easily with the hilltop Hodosan Shrine and the geology of the wider Chichibu Geopark.

Hill country onsen one hour from central Tokyo

東京から1時間、奥武蔵の静かな里山温泉

Tokigawa, in central Saitama's Hiki hills, is the quiet, local-feeling end of the prefecture's onsen — a "satoyama" landscape of managed woods and tea fields about 80 minutes from Ikebukuro. The town's day-use baths, the "Tamagawa Onsen" and the riverside "Shikisaikan," serve walkers exploring the hill trails, far from the tour buses of Chichibu. Above the town stands the ancient Jikoji temple, founded by tradition in 673 and said to be the oldest in Saitama, the ninth stop on the Bando Kannon pilgrimage. It is a budget-friendly slice of real countryside, close enough for an easy day out.
