Oita Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Oita — bilingual guide for travelers.

Oita is, by the numbers, the undisputed onsen capital of Japan: its springs gush more hot water than anywhere else in the country — over 100,000 litres a minute from more than 2,800 sources, the most of any city, almost all of them in Beppu. The variety is staggering: of Japan's ten official spring types, seven bubble up within Beppu alone, from milky sulfur to iron-red and acidic waters. Beyond the steaming "Hells of Beppu" lie the elegant ryokan town of Yufuin beneath Mt. Yufu, the steam-wreathed alleys of Kannawa, the world-class carbonated springs of Nagayu, and the 300-year-old stone-paved street of Yunohira. Whether you want a ¥500 public bath or a hushed luxury ryokan, Oita has a soak for it.

Beppu is the largest hot-spring resort in Japan, pumping out more water from more sources than any other city — over 100,000 litres a minute from some 2,800 springs. The town is really eight onsen districts in one ("Beppu Hatto" — Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Horita, Myoban, Kannawa, Shibaseki, and Kamegawa), each with its own water, altitude, and mood: seaside baths, hillside view baths, and the sulfur-steam highlands of Myoban with its centuries-old "yu-no-hana" mineral huts. The famous "Hells of Beppu" (Jigoku Meguri) is a tour of seven dramatic, look-don't-bathe hot-spring sights — among them the cobalt "Sea Hell," the blood-red "Chinoike," and a roaring geyser. With day-use baths from just a few hundred yen, Beppu is the easiest place in Japan to "see" and sample onsen culture.

  • Japan's largest onsen output, with 8 distinct districts
  • The world-famous "Hells of Beppu" sightseeing route

Yufuin is Oita's most refined onsen town, spread across a quiet basin beneath the twin-peaked Mt. Yufu (1,583m). Often called "the Yufuin of the West to match Karuizawa in the East," it grew up around three storied ryokan — Tamanoyu, Kamenoi Bessou, and Sanso Murata — whose owners championed a low-key, landscape-first style now copied nationwide. Mornings begin with mist rising off Kinrin Lake; days are spent browsing the artisan cafés, galleries, and sweet shops of Yunotsubo Street. Many of its boutique inns offer rooms with private open-air baths, and it consistently ranks at or near the top of Japan's onsen popularity surveys — especially with couples and women.

Kannawa is the most atmospheric of Beppu's eight districts — a warren of old lanes where white steam pours from vents, rooftops, and gutters day and night. The townscape is so distinctive that, together with neighbouring Myoban, it was designated a national Important Cultural Landscape in 2012. Legend says the wandering monk Ippen calmed the raging "hells" here in 1276 and opened the original steam bath; today the "Kannawa Mushiyu" still steams bathers on a fragrant bed of sekisho herbs inside a stone chamber. The local specialty is "jigoku-mushi" — seafood, eggs, and vegetables steamed over the natural vents, a cooking style loved by cure-seekers since the Edo period. It's the best place in Beppu to feel old-fashioned hot-spring-town life.

  • "Jigoku-mushi" — cooking food in natural onsen steam
  • Atmospheric steam-filled streets, especially at dusk
  • Affordable "kashi-yu" rental private baths

Tucked into the mountains of Taketa City, Nagayu is famed for some of the most heavily carbonated natural spring water in Japan — soak in it and tiny CO₂ bubbles cling to your skin like soda, which is why locals call it the "Lamune" (ramune-soda) spring. Its landmark is the "Lamune Onsen-kan" (2005), a whimsical building of charred cedar and plaster with pine trees growing from its copper roof, designed by the architect-historian Terunobu Fujimori. The German-cabin look is a nod to Germany, the pioneer of carbonated-spring cure culture, and the bathhouse keeps a drinking-spring tap in the old "insen" tradition. A quiet mountain village made for slow, restorative bathing.

  • German-influenced Kurhaus therapeutic bathing tradition

A quiet sibling to nearby Yufuin (the two share Yufu City), Yunohira is built along a steep stone-paved slope — roughly 500 metres of pavement laid some 300 years ago, lined with wooden inns, red lanterns, and a handful of tiny public baths. Five "soto-yu" bathhouses dot the slope, including the "Kin-no-yu" (Gold Bath) at the top, the riverside "Suna-yu," and the day-alternating men/women "Naka-no-yu." The waters have long been treasured as a gentle "stomach cure," and the wandering haiku poet Taneda Santoka was so moved by Yunohira's warmth that a small museum, "Shigure-kan," commemorates him here. It's one of Kyushu's most evocative old healing-bath towns.

  • Iconic stone-paved street (ishidatami)
  • 5 small public baths along the slope to hop between
  • Old-school yu-ji (healing stay) culture still alive

Insider Tips for Oita

Know before you go

Choose Your Beppu District

Beppu isn't one onsen — it's eight, each with different waters. For first-timers, the central Beppu district is easy to access. For atmosphere, head to steam-filled Kannawa. For families, Kankaiji has lovely views.

Visit Yufuin Early Morning

Kinrin Lake is most beautiful at sunrise when the morning mist rolls off the water — and the famously crowded Yunotsubo Street is almost empty before 9am.

Try Jigoku-Mushi in Kannawa

At the public "Jigoku-mushi Kobo" you can cook your own vegetables, seafood, and eggs in 100°C onsen steam — a one-of-a-kind food experience you can only have in Beppu.

Furusato Nozei Onsen Tickets

Many Oita ryokan offer stays as "furusato nozei" (hometown tax) gifts. Japanese taxpayers can effectively get a luxury Yufuin stay for the cost of the 2,000-yen handling fee.

Avoid the Cherry Blossom Crush

Yufuin and Beppu fill up months ahead during cherry blossom (late March) and autumn foliage (early November). Book early — or aim for the quieter winter and early summer windows.

Travel Essentials

Plan your trip

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Oita onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Beppu vs. Yufuin — which one is better?

They're completely different. Beppu is dynamic, varied, and budget-friendly — perfect for first-timers who want to "see" the onsen experience. Yufuin is quiet, refined, and ryokan-focused — better for couples, slow travelers, and luxury seekers. Many visitors stay one night in each.

Is English spoken in Oita onsen?

In Yufuin and major Beppu hotels, basic English works. Smaller traditional baths may require a phrase book or translation app — but onsen rules are mostly universal: wash before entering, no towel in the water.

How many nights do I need in Oita?

Minimum 2 nights to cover Beppu and Yufuin properly. 3 nights lets you add a deeper experience like Nagayu or Yunohira. A full week is rewarded if you want to soak in eight different districts of Beppu Hatto.
