"Snow Country" — 80 min from Tokyo by Shinkansen

Echigo Yuzawa is the most accessible "real snow country" onsen from Tokyo — just 80 minutes via the Joetsu Shinkansen, exiting the long Daishimizu Tunnel into a transformed white world (the legendary opening of Kawabata's "Snow Country": "The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country"). GALA Yuzawa is Japan's only ski resort connected directly to its own Shinkansen station, and several more resorts sit within walking distance of Echigo-Yuzawa Station, alongside 60+ ryokan/hotels at every price point. Spring waters are alkaline simple type, soft on the skin. Winter snowfall regularly tops 3 meters in town. Free public footbaths dot the station area.

日本一鮮やかなエメラルドグリーンの硫黄泉

Tsukioka boasts one of the most photogenic hot spring colors in Japan — a vivid emerald green, the result of high sulfur content interacting with light. The waters were discovered relatively recently — struck at over 50°C during oil drilling in 1915. Strong concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and metasilicic acid (among the highest sulfur content in Japan) have long earned the spring its reputation as a "beauty water." 12+ ryokan and hotels line a compact, photogenic onsen street. 月岡温泉は鮮やかなエメラルドグリーンの湯色で知られる、日本一カラフルな温泉地のひとつ。1915年、石油の試掘中に50°C超の湯が偶然湧出した比較的新しい湯です。硫黄含有量は日本トップクラスで、高濃度の硫化水素とメタケイ酸を含み、古くから「美人の湯」として知られます。コンパクトで風情ある温泉街に12軒以上の旅館・ホテルが集まります。新潟駅から白新線35分+タクシー15分。

日本海に沈む夕日を浴びる露天風呂

Senami sits directly on the Sea of Japan coast in northern Niigata, with hot springs bubbling up at 95°C from the sea floor. The 1904-era origin came from oil prospectors — once again — striking thermal water. The town's defining feature is the western-facing coastline: every ryokan offers open-air baths that look directly into the Sea of Japan sunset, easily one of Japan's most spectacular nightly onsen views. Local seafood (especially "salt-aged" Murakami salmon) features in dinners. From Niigata: 45 min by Uetsu line to Murakami Station + 5 min taxi.

瀬波温泉は新潟北部の日本海沿いに位置し、海底から95°Cで湯が湧きます。1904年、石油試掘で偶然温泉を掘り当てたのが起源。最大の特徴は西向きの海岸線——どの旅館も露天風呂から日本海の夕日を真正面に望み、日本屈指の「夕日温泉」として知られます。地元グルメは「塩引き鮭」など村上の海産物。新潟から羽越線で村上駅まで45分+タクシー5分。

Imperial family's ski-onsen — 1816 founding on Mt. Myoko

皇室御用達、妙高山麓の高原温泉郷

Akakura is one of Japan's most prestigious mountain onsen, founded in 1816 at the foot of the sacred Mt. Myoko. It was run directly by the Takada domain — the only "domain-operated" (han-ei) onsen in Japan. In the 1920s it became an imperial-adjacent retreat (the future Empress Kojun stayed here in 1923), and in 1937 the government opened the prestigious Akakura Kanko Hotel, operated by Imperial Hotel, as a state tourism project. Modern Akakura is famous for the Akakura Onsen Ski Resort and remains a fashionable two-season destination (snow + summer alpine hiking). The spring water is gentle alkaline-simple type. 赤倉温泉は1816年（江戸後期）に妙高山の麓に開かれた、由緒ある高原温泉。高田藩が直接運営した日本唯一の「藩営温泉」。大正期には皇族の避暑地となり（1923年、後の香淳皇后が滞在）、1937年には国策ホテル「赤倉観光ホテル」（帝国ホテルが運営）も開業した格式ある温泉地。冬は赤倉温泉スキー場でスキー客、夏は妙高山登山と二季楽しめる高原リゾート。湯はやわらかいアルカリ性単純泉。東京から北陸新幹線で上越妙高まで1時間50分+バス。

Niigata's "geisha onsen" + Yahiko Shrine country

新潟の芸者温泉、弥彦神社の麓

Iwamuro sits at the foot of the sacred Mt. Yahiko in central Niigata, with a 300-year history of geisha culture — one of the few onsen towns in Niigata where you can still arrange traditional ryokan dinner-entertainment performances. The spring (1713 founding) is sulfur-bearing simple type. Combine with neighboring Yahiko Shrine (one of Niigata's most important Shinto shrines, with the famous Yahiko-no-Kiku chrysanthemum show in November). 岩室温泉は霊峰弥彦山の麓に広がる、新潟でも数少ない芸者文化が今も息づく温泉地。1713年開湯で300年の歴史があり、温泉街で伝統的な「お座敷遊び」（芸者との宴）を体験できる新潟でも希少な存在です。湯は硫黄含有の単純泉。隣接する弥彦神社（新潟随一の名社、11月「弥彦の菊」も名物）と組合せが定番。里山の風景、酒蔵、ゆったりした時間が魅力。新潟駅から越後線で50分。
