Obama Onsen lines the shore of Tachibana Bay at the western foot of the Shimabara Peninsula, famous for some of Japan's highest source temperatures (around 100°C) and the resulting steam that rises along the seafront. Its signature is "Hot Foot 105" — a 105 m footbath (said to be Japan's longest), the number marking the source heat. The west-facing coast delivers spectacular sunsets over the bay. Shimabara, on the eastern coast of the peninsula beneath Mt. Unzen, is celebrated as a "city of water" — pure spring water gushes from countless points, famously flowing through the "Shimeiso" garden and the canals of the "Carp-Swimming Town" (Koi-no-Oyogu-Machi), where colorful carp glide through crystal-clear streets. Shimabara Castle, rebuilt with a striking white keep, anchors the historic samurai quarter. The iron-bearing seaside onsen overlooks the Ariake Sea toward Kumamoto. A few ryokan and hotels operate. Hirado, a westernmost island town reached by a graceful red bridge, was Japan's first port of Western trade — the Portuguese arrived in 1550, followed by Dutch and English trading posts, making it a cosmopolitan hub long before Nagasaki took over. That legacy survives in the restored Dutch Trading Post, hilltop Hirado Castle, and the photogenic juxtaposition of a Catholic church above traditional temples. Huis Ten Bosch, near Sasebo, is one of Japan's largest theme parks — a meticulous recreation of a Dutch town with canals, windmills, tulip fields, and one of the world's biggest illumination displays.
