Shibu and Yudanaka are twin onsen villages in the Shiga Highlands, dating to the 8th century. Shibu's atmospheric main street — lit by stone lanterns at night — leads through 9 traditional public bathhouses ("kyu-yu meguri"), open free to overnight guests of any ryokan. Yudanaka next door is the access point for the famous Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen-koen), where Japanese macaques bathe in their own private hot spring — the only such sight on Earth. 13 free public baths — village-maintained for centuries

13の外湯を村人が守り続ける、住民自治の温泉村

Nozawa is a hillside onsen village where the local community has maintained 13 free public bathhouses ("soto-yu") for centuries — a unique system of communal stewardship found nowhere else in Japan. The crown jewel is the "Ogama" — a boiling natural cauldron at 90°C where villagers cook eggs and vegetables in baskets, used continuously since the 1500s. By winter, Nozawa transforms into one of Japan's most beloved ski resorts, and on January 15 hosts the spectacular Dosojin Fire Festival (a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property). Reach via Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama, then 25-min bus.

Shinshu's oldest onsen — Heian temples + Sanada history

信州最古、平安時代から続く真田氏の湯

Bessho is said to be the oldest onsen in Shinshu (the old name for Nagano), with legends dating it back nearly two millennia. The village is filled with national-treasure-grade temples — Anraku-ji's octagonal three-storied pagoda (a Kamakura-period National Treasure, the only one of its kind in Japan), Kitamuki Kannon, and Joraku-ji — earning it the nickname "Little Kamakura of Shinshu." The Sanada clan, famed from the Siege of Osaka, is said to have used Bessho as a healing retreat. Today three free public bathhouses and atmospheric ryokan welcome visitors. From Ueda Shinkansen station, 30 min via the charming Bessho-line local train.

別所温泉は信州最古と伝わる、約二千年の歴史を持つ湯。安楽寺の八角三重塔（国宝・鎌倉期で日本唯一の八角塔）、北向観音、常楽寺など文化財が集中し「信州の鎌倉」と呼ばれます。真田一族の湯治場として知られ、家臣たちが戦傷を癒したとも伝わります。現在も3つの外湯（無料）と風情のある旅館が並びます。上田駅から「別所線」というローカル線で30分のアクセス。

Milky-white "three days bathing = three years healthy"

乳白色の秘湯、「白骨に三日入れば三年風邪をひかぬ」

Shirahone sits at 1,400m altitude in the Northern Alps, accessed via the same route as Kamikochi. The name "Shirahone" (white bones) comes from the calcium carbonate that turns the spring water and the bathtub walls milky-white over time. A folk saying — "Three days at Shirahone = three years without illness" — has drawn yuji (recuperative) bathers for 500+ years. Only a dozen-odd ryokan operate in the village, keeping it intimate and authentically remote, with snow-viewing baths a winter draw. From Matsumoto Station, 80 min by bus.

北アルプスの標高1400mに湧く白骨温泉。上高地と同じルートでアクセスします。湯に含まれる炭酸カルシウムが空気に触れて白濁し、湯船の縁にも白い結晶が積もることから「白骨」と呼ばれます。「白骨に三日入れば三年風邪をひかぬ」という言い伝えが500年以上前から伝わる名湯。旅館は十数軒のみで、秘湯の趣を保ったまま。冬の雪見露天も名物です（一部の宿は冬季休業）。松本駅からバス80分。

Lake Suwa shore + Suwa Grand Shrine on the JR mainline

諏訪湖畔の歴史温泉、JR本線でアクセス神

Kamisuwa is the easiest "real onsen town" to reach from Tokyo without leaving the main train line — just 2h 10min via the Azusa limited express. The town wraps along the eastern shore of Lake Suwa, with hot spring ryokan, sake breweries (5 within walking distance), and the historic Suwa Taisha grand shrine all within 30 minutes' walk. The lake hosts the spectacular August 15 Suwa Lake Fireworks (40,000+ shells, among Japan's largest), and winter's "Omiwatari" ice ridge — a rare natural phenomenon — forms when the lake freezes solid.

上諏訪温泉は新宿から特急あずさで2時間10分、本線アクセスで来られる稀有な本格温泉地。諏訪湖東岸沿いに温泉旅館・酒蔵（徒歩圏に5軒）・諏訪大社（周辺）が集中します。1928年築の「片倉館」（千人風呂・国の重要文化財）では日帰り入浴も。8月15日の諏訪湖花火大会は約4万発と国内最大級。冬には湖が全面凍結し、神様が渡ったと伝わる「御神渡り（おみわたり）」という氷の隆起現象も。
