Kurokawa Onsen is one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring villages — a hidden valley in the Aso highlands where about 30 ryokan share a deliberately unified "satoyama" aesthetic (no neon signs, natural wood, stone lanterns). The signature experience is the "Nyuto Tegata" — a ¥1,500 wooden token granting access to any 3 of the village's 24+ open-air baths ("rotenburo"), each with a different setting (riverside, cave, forest). The Tanohara River runs through the center. The village's landscape-led revival since the 1980s became a national model for onsen-town tourism. From Aso Station: 50 min by bus.

Largest onsen in the Aso caldera — Natsume Soseki's retreat

阿蘇カルデラ最大の湯、夏目漱石ゆかり

Uchinomaki is the largest onsen district within the Aso caldera — one of the world's biggest volcanic calderas (25 km across), with the active Mt. Aso at its center. The town has about 20 ryokan with abundant spring volume (over 80 sources). Natsume Soseki visited and wrote about the area in his novel "Nihyaku-toka." The flat caldera-floor setting offers grassland panoramas and Mt. Aso views. The springs are sodium chloride / hydrogen carbonate type. 内牧は阿蘇カルデラ内最大の温泉地——世界最大級の火山カルデラ（差し渡し25km）で、中心に活火山・阿蘇山がそびえます。約20軒の旅館があり、80以上の源泉という豊富な湯量。夏目漱石が訪れ小説「二百十日」に描きました。平坦なカルデラ底の立地で、草原のパノラマと阿蘇の眺望。湯は塩化物・炭酸水素塩泉。阿蘇火山観光（火山活動が許せば火口見学）と大観峰展望台の玄関口。熊本からJR豊肥線で1時間30分。

Yamaga Onsen is famous for its exceptionally silky, slightly slippery "toromi" alkaline water — said to leave skin remarkably smooth. The 800+ year-old town is the home of the spectacular "Yamaga Toro Matsuri" (August 15–16), when 1,000 women dance through the streets balancing golden paper lanterns on their heads. The 1910 "Yachiyo-za" — a beautifully restored wooden kabuki theater — is a designated Important Cultural Property. About 10 ryokan in a historic district. The springs are alkaline simple type. 山鹿温泉はとりわけ絹のような、わずかにぬめりのある「とろみ湯」（アルカリ性）で有名——肌が驚くほど滑らかになるとされます。800年以上の歴史を持つ町は、壮麗な「山鹿灯籠まつり」（8月15〜16日、1000人の女性が金色の紙灯籠を頭に載せて街を舞う）の本拠地。1910年築の「八千代座」（美しく復元された木造歌舞伎芝居小屋）は重要文化財指定。歴史地区に約10軒の旅館。湯はアルカリ性単純泉。熊本からバスで1時間。

1800年の蒸し湯の谷、春の鯉のぼり祭り

Tsuetate Onsen straddles the Kumamoto-Oita border in a steep river valley with a 1,800-year history (origin legend tied to Empress Jingu). The town is known for its abundant hot steam — traditional "mushiyu" (steam baths) and the rising vapor that wraps the narrow valley alleys. Each spring (late March to early May), some 3,500 carp streamers ("koinobori") are strung across the Tsuetate River gorge, a spectacular seasonal sight. About 15 ryokan stack the valley walls. 球磨川の城下町、球磨焼酎の蔵と相良700年

Hitoyoshi sits in a basin along the Kuma River — one of Japan's three fastest rivers — in southern Kumamoto. The town was the castle seat of the Sagara clan for 700 unbroken years (12th–19th century), giving it a rich heritage of temples, the Hitoyoshi Castle ruins, and the National Treasure Aoi Aso Shrine. It's also the home of "Kuma shochu" — a regionally protected rice shochu (28 distilleries). The hot springs date to the 17th century and feature gentle hydrogen-carbonate waters. About 15 ryokan along the river. Note: the area suffered major flooding in 2020 and continues recovery — confirm facility status. From Kumamoto: 1h 20min by highway bus.
