Ashizuri Onsen-go is a small cluster of resort hotels at Cape Ashizuri — Shikoku's southernmost point, jutting into the Pacific Ocean with 80m vertical cliffs. The cape's symbolic Ashizuri Lighthouse (1914) has appeared in numerous novels and films. The hot springs were developed in the 1970s. About 6 hotels offer Pacific Ocean panorama baths — sunrise views are particularly spectacular (the cape faces ENE). The 88-temple Buddhist pilgrimage circuit's 38th temple, Kongofukuji, sits on the cape. From Kochi City: 3h 30min by JR + bus, or 2h by direct express bus.

Kochi City urban onsen on samurai-era Tosa Yamauchi grounds

高知市内の都市温泉、土佐山内家屋敷跡

Sansuien is the premier ryokan in Kochi City, built on the historic grounds of the Tosa Yamauchi clan — the daimyo family who ruled Tosa Province (Kochi) for 270 years from 1601. The Kagamigawa River runs in front of the property; Kochi Castle (one of only 12 surviving original castles) is a 5-min walk. The hot spring was developed in 1957 from on-site drilling. Sansuien is the rare "urban full-amenity onsen ryokan" in Kochi — perfect for travelers wanting to combine city sightseeing with onsen culture. The famous "Hirome Ichiba" (a covered food market with Katsuo no Tataki) is 10 min on foot.

Umaji Onsen sits in Umaji Village, deep in the Yasuda River valley of eastern Kochi — population 850, but globally famous for its yuzu citrus and brand-building success ("Umaji Village Yuzu" products are exported worldwide). The village was repeatedly chosen as "Japan's happiest mountain village" in surveys. The hot spring was developed in 1996 as a community welfare project. The single main ryokan plus 2 minshuku offer onsen baths fed by alkaline simple water. Local cuisine is yuzu-centric: yuzu-flavored mountain trout, yuzu sushi, yuzu sake. The forest cycling road and ride-on diesel railway through old logging routes are unique attractions.

太平洋の波音とカツオ漁港・中土佐の本陣

Kuroshio Honjin is a single dedicated onsen complex on the Pacific coast of Nakatosa Town, with cliff-edge open-air baths overlooking the open ocean — bathing accompanied by the constant rhythm of Pacific waves. The town of Nakatosa (Kure Port) is one of Japan's iconic "Katsuo" (bonito) one-pole fishing ports, branding itself "Katsuo no Kuni" (the bonito country). The famous "Kure Asaichi" Saturday morning market sells fresh-caught bonito direct from boats. The hot spring is sodium chloride type. Combined with the Kure morning market and the straw-seared bonito cuisine, this makes a unique cuisine + onsen destination. From Kochi: 1h 30min by JR + taxi.

Niyodo Blue river gorge — Japan's clearest river

仁淀ブルーの渓谷、日本一の清流

Kinoka Onsen is a small ryokan complex in the Niyodo River valley of central Kochi — the Niyodo is famous as "Japan's clearest river" for its electric turquoise-blue water transparency, a phenomenon nicknamed "Niyodo Blue" (仁淀ブルー). The hot spring was developed for hikers and kayakers visiting the river. The single ryokan offers riverside baths plus access to the gorge's emerald pools, hidden waterfalls, and the famous "Nakatsu Gorge" walking trail. Best for nature enthusiasts. From Kochi City: 90 min by car (no direct public transit).
