Ibusuki, at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, is famous for "suna-mushi onsen" — a sand bath where attendants bury you (in a yukata) up to the neck in black volcanic beach sand naturally heated by hot springs welling up beneath. The weight and steam-heat of the sand are said to make for a deeply relaxing experience. The practice has roughly 300 years of recorded history here and is found in very few places worldwide. After the sand bath, guests rinse and soak in standard hot spring baths. About 25 ryokan and hotels. Nearby Cape Nagasakibana and Lake Ikeda add scenery. Kirishima Onsen-go is a cluster of spring areas spread across the forested slopes of the Kirishima mountains — a sacred volcanic range tied to Japanese creation mythology (Mt. Takachiho-no-mine, where the deity Ninigi is said to have descended). The waters are richly varied: milky sulfur springs, clear carbonate springs, iron springs. Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo famously visited in 1866 in what is often described as Japan's first honeymoon, climbing Mt. Takachiho. About 20 ryokan amid the highland forest. Myoken Onsen lines the Amori River ("river of the descended gods") gorge in the Kirishima foothills — a quieter, more secluded alternative to the main Kirishima resort. The area is known for carbonate-rich springs, some of which are traditionally used for "insen" (drinking the spring water) at designated taps. About 10 ryokan tucked into the riverside greenery, several of them long-established. The setting is intimate and nature-bound, popular with travelers seeking a calm gorge retreat. From Kagoshima Airport: 15 min by car — among the most airport-convenient onsen in Japan.

活火山の麓、錦江湾を望む海辺の湯

Sakurajima Onsen sits on the shores of Sakurajima — one of the world's most active volcanoes, rising directly across Kinko Bay from Kagoshima City (the "Naples of the East"). The amber-brown, iron-rich springs look out over the bay toward the city skyline, with the smoking volcanic peak behind. The "Magma Onsen" public bath and several lodgings make a striking experience: soaking in volcanic waters at the base of a live volcano. Sakurajima is reached by a 15-minute ferry that runs 24 hours from Kagoshima City. Eruptions are frequent but monitored; ash-fall is a normal part of local life. Furusato Onsen is on the southeastern shore of Sakurajima, historically famous for a seaside open-air bath set among the rocks at the water's edge beside a sacred shrine with a giant tied "shimenawa" rope. Bathers traditionally wore a white yukata in the mixed open-air bath as part of the shrine-linked custom. The amber chloride springs face Kinko Bay. The area is small and atmospheric, offering a distinctive blend of volcanic seaside bathing and Shinto sanctity.
