Gateway to Kotohira-gu Shrine — 785-step pilgrimage
Konpira Onsen-go is the historic ryokan district at the base of "Konpira-san" — formally Kotohira-gu Shrine — one of Japan's most revered pilgrimage destinations. The shrine perches on Mt. Zozu, reached via a famous 785-step approach (1,368 steps including the inner shrine). Pilgrims have stayed here for centuries; today about 30 traditional ryokan and modern hotels operate. The hot springs were developed in 1997 from deep drilling. Combined with the 1835 wooden "Kanamaru-za" — Japan's oldest surviving kabuki theater — and the historic shop-lined approach (omotesando) leading up the steps, Konpira makes a uniquely complete cultural-onsen visit. From Takamatsu: 1h by JR.
