Twelve historic onsen areas inspired by Kenji Miyazawa
"Hanamaki Onsen" is really a string of a dozen different hot-spring hamlets — Hanamaki, Dai, Shidotaira, Osawa, Namari, Yamanokami and more — scattered through the hills that the poet Kenji Miyazawa wandered and turned into his imaginary "Ihatov." Each has its own character: Osawa is a beloved old self-catering cure inn where Miyazawa himself bathed, while Namari is home to the celebrated "Shirozaru-no-Yu," a chest-deep standing bath that, at about 125 cm, is the deepest naturally-welling rock bath in Japan — discovered, legend says, when an ancestor watched a white monkey heal its wounds in the spring. It all lies 15 minutes from the Shinkansen at Shin-Hanamaki.
