日本三名瀑「袋田の滝」のふもとの湯

Fukuroda Onsen sits at the foot of Fukuroda Falls, counted among the "Three Greatest Waterfalls of Japan." The cascade drops 120 metres in four broad tiers, and tradition has it that the wandering poet Saigyo so admired it that he declared one had to come once in each of the four seasons to know its true beauty — hence its other name, "Yodo-no-Taki," the Falls of Four Times. It transforms completely through the year: fiery foliage in early November, fresh green in June, and, in the deepest cold, the rare spectacle of an entirely frozen falls. The springs are the perfect warm-up after the walk to the viewing deck.

袋田温泉は、「日本三名瀑」に数えられる袋田の滝のふもとに湧きます。滝は高さ120m、四段に幅広く流れ落ち、放浪の歌人・西行法師が「この滝は四季に一度ずつ来てみねば真の風趣は味わえない」と讃えたことから、別名「四度（よど）の滝」と呼ばれます。一年を通して表情を変え、11月初旬は燃えるような紅葉、6月は新緑、そして厳寒には滝全体が凍りつく「氷瀑」という稀な絶景に。観瀑台まで歩いたあとに温まるのに、これ以上ない湯です。

Clifftop Pacific Ocean views at an artist's retreat

岡倉天心ゆかりの絶景海岸、断崖の温泉

Izura is the meditative coast where the art philosopher Okakura Tenshin gathered the leading Japanese-style painters of the Meiji era — Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan and others — who produced many of their masterworks here. On a rock above the black-stone shore stands the little vermilion "Rokkakudo," a hexagonal pavilion Tenshin designed himself to express the unity of Asian thought; swept away by the 2011 tsunami, it was faithfully rebuilt in 2012. The sound of waves along this coast is listed among "Japan's 100 Soundscapes," and the cliff-top onsen ryokan turn every sunrise over the Pacific into something close to a spiritual experience.

五浦（いづら）は、思想家・岡倉天心が明治の日本画の巨匠たち——横山大観、下村観山ら——を集め、彼らが多くの傑作を生んだ思索の海岸です。黒い岩礁の上には、天心がアジアの思想の調和を表そうと自ら設計した朱塗りの小さな「六角堂」が立ちます。2011年の津波で流失しましたが、2012年に忠実に再建されました。この海岸の波音は「日本の音風景100選」に選ばれ、崖の上の温泉宿では、太平洋から昇る朝日のひとときが、ほとんど精神的な体験になります。

Sunrise torii on the Pacific + seafood town

海上鳥居の朝日と、新鮮海鮮の港町

Oarai is famous nationwide for the "Kamiiso-no-Torii," a vermilion gate of Oarai Isosaki Shrine planted on a wave-washed rock just offshore — and for the moment, especially in winter, when the rising sun lifts directly behind it. The town is a working fishing port with superb seafood markets, and its onsen ryokan, many facing the sea, pair an early-morning bath with that sunrise. In winter the local catch becomes "ankou-nabe," the famous monkfish hotpot. It is about two hours from Tokyo by JR limited express and the Kashima Rinkai Railway.

大洗は、沖の波打つ岩の上に立つ大洗磯前神社の朱の鳥居「神磯の鳥居」——とりわけ冬、その真後ろから朝日が昇る瞬間——で全国的に知られます。町は活気ある漁港で、海鮮市場の質も高く、海を向いた温泉宿が多いので、朝風呂とその日の出を一緒に楽しめます。冬には地元の漁が名物「あんこう鍋」になります。東京からはJR特急と鹿島臨海鉄道で約2時間です。

Iconic "Two Islands" sunset coast

名物「二ツ島」が浮かぶ夕暮れの海岸温泉

In the far north-east corner of Ibaraki, the little coast at Isohara is marked by the "Futatsu-jima," twin rock islands rising from the sea and glowing at dawn. It is the birthplace of Noguchi Ujo, ranked with Kitahara Hakushu and Saijo Yaso as one of Japan's three great writers of children's songs — author of beloved verses like "Nanatsu-no-Ko," "Shabondama," and "Akai Kutsu" — and his seaside birth-house, "Kankaitei," still looks out over the water. The onsen ryokan here mostly command sea views, the local seafood is excellent, and winter brings the famous monkfish hotpot.

茨城の北東端、北茨城市の小さな磯原海岸には、海から立ちあがり、夜明けに輝く岩礁「二ツ島」が浮かびます。ここは、北原白秋・西条八十と並ぶ三大童謡詩人・野口雨情の生地。「七つの子」「シャボン玉」「赤い靴」など、愛され続ける童謡を生んだ詩人で、海を望む生家「観海亭」が今も残ります。温泉宿は海を見渡す立地が多く、地元の海の幸も豊か。冬にはあんこう鍋が味わえます。

Sacred-mountain onsen one hour from Tokyo

万葉集にも詠まれた霊峰、東京1時間の山岳温泉

Mt. Tsukuba (877m) is one of Japan's celebrated sacred mountains — "Fuji in the west, Tsukuba in the east" — with twin peaks, the male Nantai and the female Nyotai, and a place in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology, more than a thousand years ago. The onsen ryokan dot its lower slopes, looking out across the Kanto plain (the Tokyo skyline on clear evenings) and the mountain at sunset. A cable car and a ropeway carry visitors up to the twin summits and the old Tsukuba-san Shrine, and it is only about 90 minutes from Tokyo by the Tsukuba Express plus a bus.

筑波山（877m）は、「西の富士、東の筑波」と並び称される日本の名峰のひとつ。男体山・女体山の双耳峰を持ち、1000年以上前の日本最古の歌集『万葉集』にも数多く詠まれた霊峰です。温泉宿は山麓に点在し、関東平野（晴れた夕方には東京の高層ビル群も）と、夕暮れの山を望みます。ケーブルカーとロープウェイが双耳の山頂と古社・筑波山神社へと運んでくれ、東京からつくばエクスプレスとバスで約90分という近さです。
