01Arima Onsen
Japan's Three Oldest" + "Three Great" — only onsen on both lists
Arima is the most historically prestigious onsen in Japan — uniquely appearing on both major rankings ("Three Oldest" with Dogo and Shirahama, "Three Great" with Kusatsu and Gero per Hayashi Razan 1665). Its first written record dates to the 8th-century "Nihon Shoki" chronicle, when Emperors Jomei and Kotoku reportedly visited. The defining feature is two distinct hot spring types from springs only 100m apart: "Kinsen" (gold spring) — iron-bearing, salty, opaque rust-brown — and "Ginsen" (silver spring) — clear, carbonated, gentle. Both rise from extremely deep faults under the Rokko mountains. The walkable old town has 30+ ryokan in a compact valley just 60 min from Kobe/Osaka. From Osaka: Hankyu/Hanshin + Kobe Electric Railway + Rokko cable, 60 min.
