Hokkaido Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Hokkaido — bilingual guide for travelers.

Hokkaido is Japan's ultimate snow-and-onsen country — a vast northern island where steaming open-air baths sit in deep winter snow and the spring waters are among the most varied anywhere. Noboribetsu pipes nine different kinds of water out of a roaring "Hell Valley"; Toya and Akan offer caldera-lake resorts (one with nightly fireworks, the other the heart of Ainu culture); Jozankei is Sapporo's gorge retreat an hour from the city; and Niseko pairs the planet's most famous powder snow with hot springs under Mt. Yotei. Add the seafood, and a northern onsen trip is hard to beat.

Noboribetsu is Hokkaido's most famous onsen town, and one of the most remarkable in all Japan. It is fed by "Jigokudani" (Hell Valley) — a 450-metre crater of bare rock, steam, and bubbling mud left by an old eruption, gushing some 10,000 tons of water a day. From it the town draws nine distinct spring types — sulfur, salt, iron, acidic, and more — so locals call it "the department store of hot springs," able to offer in one place what most regions spread across many. The whole town leans into its demonic theme, with statues of ogres (oni) guarding the streets. It was opened in 1858, when an Edo carpenter built a bathhouse to treat his wife's skin ailment, and a short walk up the valley leads to the boiling Oyunuma pond.

Toyako sits on the shore of Lake Toya, a near-perfect circular caldera lake with a wooded island at its centre that never freezes, even in deepest winter. Lakeside ryokan look out over the water and the smoking cone of Mt. Usu, which last erupted in 2000, while the bizarre Showa-Shinzan — a lava dome that pushed up out of a farmer's field in 1943–45 — rises nearby (both belong to a UNESCO Global Geopark). Fireworks are launched over the lake every single night from late April to October, best watched from an open-air bath. The town also hosted the 2008 G8 Summit.

Just an hour from central Sapporo and within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Jozankei is the city's "back parlour" onsen. It was opened in 1866 when the wandering monk Miizumi Jozan — for whom the town is named — was led by an Ainu youth to springs welling up from the bed and banks of the Toyohira River; some fifty-odd sources still bubble out around the Tsukimi and Maizuru bridges. The gorge blazes red and gold every late October, making this one of Hokkaido's premier autumn spots, while a town kappa (river-imp) legend gives it a playful character. With abundant day-use baths and footbaths, it is the easiest onsen escape in all Hokkaido.

Deep in eastern Hokkaido, Akanko lies on the shore of a caldera lake famous for "marimo" — rare spherical algae balls that are a designated Special Natural Monument. The town is also Hokkaido's largest Ainu kotan (village), home to about 120 residents, where you can watch UNESCO-listed Ainu ceremonial dance at the permanent "Ikoro" theatre and shop for intricate wood carvings. Bubbling "bokke" mud pots steam at the lakeshore, the volcanoes Oakan and Meakan frame the view, and the town makes a perfect base for the wild east — Kushiro Wetland, Lake Mashu, and the Shiretoko Peninsula all within reach.

Niseko is world-famous for "Niseko powder" — dry, deep snow that draws skiers from across the globe — but it is also a genuine onsen country. Beneath the perfect cone of Mt. Yotei (1,898m, the "Ezo Fuji"), the area gathers a whole spread of springs: luxury hotel baths, mountain ryokan, and rustic milky outdoor pools at sources like Goshiki and Konbu. After a day on the slopes, there is no better reward than steam rising into the cold air. Thanks to its international crowd, Niseko is also the most English-friendly — and most tattoo-friendly — onsen area in Hokkaido.

  • Views of Mt. Yotei ("Ezo Fuji") from many baths

Travel Essentials

Plan your trip

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Hokkaido onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Best time to visit Hokkaido onsen?

Winter (December–March) for snow open-air baths — the iconic Hokkaido experience. Autumn (October) for Jozankei foliage. Summer (July–August) is also lovely and far less crowded than winter. Each season has its own appeal.

Can I do Hokkaido onsen as a day trip from Sapporo?

Yes — Jozankei is one hour by bus and has plenty of day-use baths. Noboribetsu and Toyako are doable as day trips (90 min and 2 hours each) but staying overnight is far more rewarding. Akan and Niseko need at least one night.

Do I need to rent a car in Hokkaido?

For Noboribetsu, Toyako, Jozankei, and Akan — buses and JR cover the main routes. For Niseko in winter, ski buses are plentiful. A rental car opens up off-the-beaten-path options like rural onsen, but isn't mandatory for main destinations.
