Gifu Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Gifu — bilingual guide for travelers.

Gifu holds two of Japan's most prestigious onsen names: Gero — designated by Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan in 1665 as one of "Japan's Three Famous Springs" alongside Arima and Kusatsu — and the Okuhida Onsen-go cluster (Hirayu, Fukuji, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio, Shinhotaka), gateway to the Northern Alps and famed for "kakurega" (hidden retreat) atmospheres. Gero's silky alkaline waters have earned a 1,000-year reputation for soft skin. Shinhotaka in the Okuhida ropeway area delivers Northern Alps views from the open-air bath at 1,000m elevation. From Nagoya: limited express to Gero in 1h 30min.

Gero earned its place among "Japan's Three Famous Springs" — alongside Arima and Kusatsu — when Edo-era Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan formally ranked it in 1665. Discovered around 1,000 years ago, Gero's alkaline simple springs (pH 9.1, almost cosmetic-grade) have long been known for leaving skin extraordinarily silky — the "Gero no Yu" (water of Gero) has been a "bijin no yu" (beauty water) since the Heian period. The town centers on the Hida River, with ryokan terraced up the hillsides and an authentic Edo-village folk museum nearby. From Nagoya, the JR Hida limited express runs direct in 1h 30min.

Hirayu is the southernmost and most accessible of the five Okuhida onsen districts. The Hirayu bus terminal serves as the gateway to Kamikochi (the iconic Northern Alps highland) and Takayama, making it the strategic base for combining onsen with alpine sightseeing. The hot springs date to the 16th century (legend says discovered by Takeda Shingen's scouts during the wars of unification), and 17+ ryokan offer everything from rustic to luxurious. The free outdoor "Hirayu Shinrin Yoku" forest footbath beneath ancient cedars is open year-round.

Shinhotaka is the deepest of the Okuhida onsen districts, set at 1,000m elevation in a gorge below the Hodaka peaks of the Northern Alps. The Shinhotaka Ropeway — Japan's only double-deck cable car — climbs to 2,156m for panoramic alpine views (the only place in Japan you can ride a gondola directly to the alpine zone). Several ryokan offer open-air baths with views directly into the 3,000m peaks. The riverside free mixed-bath "Shinhotaka no Yu" is a hidden-onsen legend — bring your own towel.

Fukuji is the most atmospheric of the Okuhida onsen — a tiny village of just 13 ryokan tucked deep in a Northern Alps valley. Legend says it was the secret healing-stay of Emperor Murakami in 947 AD, who came to escape Kyoto's political intrigue. The village preserves a Showa-era pastoral aesthetic: thatched-roof farmhouses converted to ryokan, hand-stretched lacquered floors, sunken hearths. The morning farmers' market ("Asaichi") under the historic Old Schoolhouse is held every morning 6:30–11am from Apr–Oct. Bus from Hirayu in 15 min.

Nagaragawa Onsen runs along the banks of the Nagara River in central Gifu City, with iconic views of Gifu Castle perched on Mt. Kinka in the background. The town's signature attraction is the 1,300-year-old "Ukai" cormorant fishing — torch-lit fishermen guide trained cormorants to catch sweetfish (ayu) in the river by night, May 11 through October 15. Watching this from a ryokan balcony or a viewing boat is one of Japan's most ancient summer experiences. The springs are iron-bearing and renowned as "kosen" (cold mineral spring) heated for bathing.

Gero Funsenchi — Free Riverside Bath

In the middle of Gero town, on the bank of the Hida River, sits "Funsenchi" — a free riverside hot spring. Since December 2021 full-body bathing is no longer allowed and it is used as a free foot-bath only. Roll up your trousers and soak your feet with the river flowing past. Best at sunset when the river and surrounding mountains turn golden.

Combine Gero + Takayama + Shirakawa-go

The classic Hida region itinerary: Nagoya → Gero (1 night) → Takayama (1 night, "Little Kyoto" + Sanmachi old town) → Shirakawa-go day trip (UNESCO thatched village). 3 days, 2 nights, all by JR Hida limited express + bus. Most photographed loop in central Japan.

Shinhotaka Ropeway in Early Morning

For clear Northern Alps views, ride the ropeway 8:30am–10am — afternoon clouds often hide the peaks. October foliage is the most spectacular but also most crowded. February–March offers crisp winter peaks with the least crowds. Round-trip ¥3,300, 25 min total ride.

Fukuji Asaichi Morning Market

From April to October, the Fukuji Onsen morning market sets up under the old Fukuji elementary schoolhouse (1875–1955) every morning 6:30–11am. Local farmers sell mountain vegetables, hida beef jerky, miso, and pickles. Free hot drinks. A peaceful village experience few foreigners reach.

Nagara River Cormorant Fishing — May to October

Ukai cormorant fishing runs every night May 11 to October 15 (rain or moon-bright nights cancel). Book a viewing boat from your Nagaragawa Onsen ryokan — most include the boat in dinner package. ¥3,500 for boat alone. Watch from 7:45pm — the bonfire shadows on the water are pure magic.

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Gifu onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.

FAQ

Common questions

Gero or Atami — which is the better "famous" onsen?

Gero is one of "Japan's Three Famous Springs" (with Arima and Kusatsu); Atami is a major onsen city often listed among "Japan's Great Onsen." Gero wins on water quality (its pH 9.1 silky alkaline water) and traditional ryokan-village atmosphere. Atami wins on access (Shinkansen 35 min from Tokyo vs. Gero 1h 30min from Nagoya), modern amenities, and ocean views. Choose by which you prefer.

Best Okuhida onsen for first-time visitors?

Hirayu — best access (direct bus to Kamikochi + Takayama), 17+ ryokan choice, walkable village, free forest footbath. For luxury secluded ryokan experience, choose Fukuji. For alpine ropeway adventure, Shinhotaka. All within 15 min of each other by car.

Can I visit Okuhida without a car?

Yes — Nohi Bus operates direct buses from Takayama Station to all 5 Okuhida onsen villages (40 min to Hirayu, 60 min to Shinhotaka). Most ryokan offer free pickup from the local bus stop. Plan around the bus schedule (every 30–60 min) — the system works smoothly for non-drivers.
