"Japan's Three Famous Springs" — 1000-year beauty-skin spring

Gero earned its place among "Japan's Three Famous Springs" — alongside Arima and Kusatsu — when Edo-era Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan formally ranked it in 1665. Discovered around 1,000 years ago, Gero's alkaline simple springs (pH 9.1, almost cosmetic-grade) have long been known for leaving skin extraordinarily silky — the "Gero no Yu" (water of Gero) has been a "bijin no yu" (beauty water) since the Heian period. The town centers on the Hida River, with ryokan terraced up the hillsides and an authentic Edo-village folk museum nearby. From Nagoya, the JR Hida limited express runs direct in 1h 30min.

下呂温泉は林羅山が1665年に「日本三名泉」と讃えた、千年の歴史を持つ名湯。pH9.1のアルカリ性単純泉は「美人の湯」として平安時代から愛され、まるで化粧水のような肌触りで湯上りの肌がツルツルになると言われています。飛騨川を中心に、両岸の山腹に旅館が段々に並びます。隣接の「下呂温泉合掌村」では飛騨地方の合掌造り集落を再現。名古屋から特急ひだで1時間30分。

Okuhida's gateway — bus hub to Kamikochi + Northern Alps

奥飛騨の玄関口、上高地・北アルプスへの拠点

Hirayu is the southernmost and most accessible of the five Okuhida onsen districts. The Hirayu bus terminal serves as the gateway to Kamikochi (the iconic Northern Alps highland) and Takayama, making it the strategic base for combining onsen with alpine sightseeing. The hot springs date to the 16th century (legend says discovered by Takeda Shingen's scouts during the wars of unification), and 17+ ryokan offer everything from rustic to luxurious. The free outdoor "Hirayu Shinrin Yoku" forest footbath beneath ancient cedars is open year-round.

奥飛騨温泉郷5湯のうち最南、最アクセス良好な平湯温泉。平湯バスターミナルは上高地・高山への観光拠点で、北アルプス観光と温泉を組合せるには絶好の立地。16世紀（武田信玄の軍勢が発見したと伝わる）の開湯で、現在17軒以上の旅館が並びます。古杉に囲まれた無料の「平湯森林足湯」は通年営業。新穂高ロープウェイにもバスで30分。

Northern Alps ropeway + open-air bath at 1,000m

新穂高ロープウェイ、標高1000m級の絶景露天

Shinhotaka is the deepest of the Okuhida onsen districts, set at 1,000m elevation in a gorge below the Hodaka peaks of the Northern Alps. The Shinhotaka Ropeway — Japan's only double-deck cable car — climbs to 2,156m for panoramic alpine views (the only place in Japan you can ride a gondola directly to the alpine zone). Several ryokan offer open-air baths with views directly into the 3,000m peaks. The riverside free mixed-bath "Shinhotaka no Yu" is a hidden-onsen legend — bring your own towel.

奥飛騨温泉郷の最奥、新穂高温泉。標高1000mの渓谷に位置し、目の前には穂高連峰が3000m級の頂を見せます。日本唯一の二階建てゴンドラ「新穂高ロープウェイ」は標高2156mまで一気に上り、北アルプスの高山帯を手軽に体験できる場所として知られます。複数の旅館が穂高ビューの露天を備え、川辺の無料混浴「新穂高の湯」は秘湯ファンの聖地。タオル持参。

"Hidden Heian Emperor's bath" — 13 thatched-roof ryokan

平安天皇の隠し湯、茅葺き屋根の13軒の宿

Fukuji is the most atmospheric of the Okuhida onsen — a tiny village of just 13 ryokan tucked deep in a Northern Alps valley. Legend says it was the secret healing-stay of Emperor Murakami in 947 AD, who came to escape Kyoto's political intrigue. The village preserves a Showa-era pastoral aesthetic: thatched-roof farmhouses converted to ryokan, hand-stretched lacquered floors, sunken hearths. The morning farmers' market ("Asaichi") under the historic Old Schoolhouse is held every morning 6:30–11am from Apr–Oct. Bus from Hirayu in 15 min.

奥飛騨で最も風情ある福地温泉。北アルプス渓谷の奥にひっそりと佇む、旅館13軒だけの極小温泉地。947年に村上天皇が京都の政争を避けて湯治した「平安天皇の隠し湯」の伝説が残ります。茅葺き屋根の古民家を改装した旅館、磨き上げた漆塗りの床、囲炉裏——昭和の里山がそのまま残る稀有な空間。4〜10月の毎朝6:30〜11時、古い校舎前で「朝市」が開催。平湯からバス15分。

Riverside onsen of Gifu City — 1,300-year cormorant fishing

岐阜市の川沿い温泉、1300年続く長良川鵜飼

Nagaragawa Onsen runs along the banks of the Nagara River in central Gifu City, with iconic views of Gifu Castle perched on Mt. Kinka in the background. The town's signature attraction is the 1,300-year-old "Ukai" cormorant fishing — torch-lit fishermen guide trained cormorants to catch sweetfish (ayu) in the river by night, May 11 through October 15. Watching this from a ryokan balcony or a viewing boat is one of Japan's most ancient summer experiences. The springs are iron-bearing and renowned as "kosen" (cold mineral spring) heated for bathing.

長良川温泉は岐阜市中心、長良川沿いに広がる温泉地。背景には金華山と岐阜城がそびえ、街の象徴的な景色を形成。最大の名物は1300年続く「長良川鵜飼」——5月11日〜10月15日の夜、篝火を灯した舟の上で鵜匠が鵜を操り鮎を獲る古代漁法を観覧できます。旅館の客室や観覧船から見る鵜飼は日本最古の夏の風物詩の一つ。湯は含鉄泉（鉄分含有）で、冷鉱泉を加温して入る伝統スタイル。
