01Iizaka Onsen
One of "Oushu's Three Famous Springs" — 1900 years old
Iizaka has been an onsen since the age of legend — tradition links it to Yamato Takeru some 1,900 years ago — and it is counted among "Oushu's Three Famous Springs," alongside Akiu and Naruko. The town is built around its public bathhouses, the famous "Iizaka nine," the oldest being the Sabako-yu, said to have been the oldest wooden bathhouse in Japan until it was rebuilt in 1993. The poet Basho soaked here in 1689 on his "Narrow Road to the Deep North." Walking the steamy lanes from one ¥200 bath to the next — the water is famously scalding — is the real Iizaka experience, just 25 minutes from Fukushima Station.
