Fukushima Onsen Guide

Top hot springs, ryokan, and day-use baths in Fukushima — bilingual guide for travelers.

福島のおすすめ温泉地・温泉宿・日帰り温泉を厳選紹介。

Fukushima's onsen go back more than a thousand years, and they cover almost every archetype Japan has to offer. Iizaka, counted among "Oushu's Three Famous Springs," was soaked in by the poet Basho on his "Narrow Road to the Deep North"; Higashiyama, just outside the castle town of Aizu-Wakamatsu, healed samurai after the Boshin War and charmed the painter Yumeji; high on Mt. Azuma, every inn at Takayu pours pure milky source-water by a 400-year-old vow; Tsuchiyu is a kokeshi-doll town; and Iwaki Yumoto, an ancient spring of the imperial records, reinvented itself as a Hawaiian resort. Add the Aizu samurai heritage and the sake, and Fukushima richly rewards the curious traveler.

Iizaka has been an onsen since the age of legend — tradition links it to Yamato Takeru some 1,900 years ago — and it is counted among "Oushu's Three Famous Springs," alongside Akiu and Naruko. The town is built around its public bathhouses, the famous "Iizaka nine," the oldest being the Sabako-yu, said to have been the oldest wooden bathhouse in Japan until it was rebuilt in 1993. The poet Basho soaked here in 1689 on his "Narrow Road to the Deep North." Walking the steamy lanes from one ¥200 bath to the next — the water is famously scalding — is the real Iizaka experience, just 25 minutes from Fukushima Station.

Just outside the samurai capital of Aizu-Wakamatsu, Higashiyama has been the "back parlour" onsen of Aizu since the Nara period, said to have been opened by the priest Gyoki around 744. In the Edo era it was the Aizu clan's own retreat, and after the Boshin War of 1868 it tended wounded samurai; the painter Takehisa Yumeji loved it and stayed three times, leaving a poem stele in the town. Historic wooden ryokan still line the Yukawa gorge — one a Registered Tangible Cultural Property that grew from the "Kitsune-yu," a bath once reserved for the Aizu lords. It pairs perfectly with Tsurugajo Castle, the Sazaedo temple, and Aizu's thirty-odd sake breweries.

Tsuchiyu is one of the three great cradles of the kokeshi doll — the "Tsuchiyu school," alongside the Naruko and Togatta styles — and giant kokeshi statues stand guard around the town. Its waters have been valued since 822 AD, welling up where the Arakawa river cuts a wooded gorge below Mt. Azuma. Quietly elegant ryokan, a long footbath, and kokeshi-painting workshops fill the small town, and it sits at the lower end of the Bandai-Azuma Skyline — the spectacular mountain road that climbs past the steaming Jododaira plateau and the cinder cone of Azuma-Kofuji, ablaze with colour each October.

Perched at 750m on the flank of Mt. Azuma, Takayu — once called "Shinobu Takayu" — is one of the "Three Takayu of Oushu," with Zao and Shirabu. It is unusual even in Japan: in 2010 the whole town made a formal "source-flow declaration," pledging that not one inn would heat, dilute, or recirculate its water, a purity it has kept for 400 years. The strongly sulfurous spring runs milky white, and the open-air bath at the Tamagoyu inn, with its thatched bath-hut among the trees, is one of the most photographed in Tohoku. Snow lies deep here in winter, and Fukushima city is only 30 minutes downhill.

  • 100% source-flow at every ryokan — no recirculation
  • Milky white sulfur water
  • Iconic "Tamago-yu" outdoor bath

Iwaki Yumoto is an ancient spring — its temple shrine appears in the 10th-century Engishiki records, and in medieval times it was reckoned one of the "Three Imperial Onsen" (San Goyu), the "Sahako-no-Miyu," alongside Shinano and Natori. Its modern fame, though, is pure reinvention: when the local Joban coal mines declined, in 1966 the mining company opened the "Joban Hawaiian Center" — now "Spa Resort Hawaiians" — a vast Polynesian-themed complex of pools, onsen, and hula shows, a story told in the hit film "Hula Girl." Easygoing and family-friendly, it is also the closest of these onsen to Tokyo, about 2 hours 15 minutes by limited express.

旅の準備

Book a Ryokan

Use major Japanese travel platforms to find ryokan with private open-air baths, tattoo-friendly facilities, or vegan kaiseki meals.

eSIM & WiFi

Most onsen towns have spotty 4G coverage. A Japan eSIM or pocket WiFi keeps Google Maps and translation apps running smoothly.

Getting There

See each onsen listing above for access details. Most Fukushima onsen towns are reachable by JR trains, limited express, or highway bus; for remote springs, a rental car gives the most flexibility.
