Futsukaichi Onsen is one of the oldest hot springs in northern Kyushu, sung of as "Suita-no-yu" in the 8th-century Manyoshu poetry anthology (by Otomo no Tabito, the Dazaifu chief minister) and later known as "Musashi Onsen." It sits beside Dazaifu — the ancient administrative capital of Kyushu — and the great Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship, drawing students and visitors year-round.
