Awara Onsen opened in 1883 when a farmer struck hot water while drilling a well — within a decade it had grown into Fukui's most prestigious onsen, attracting writers, politicians, and military officers. Today Awara is one of just 5–10 onsen towns in Japan with active "ozashiki" geisha entertainment (where guests dine in private ryokan rooms with geisha music, dance, and conversation). 40+ ryokan and hotels surround a compact, walkable onsen district. The "Dento Geino-kan" (Traditional Performing Arts Hall) in the Yu-no-machi plaza keeps the geisha tradition alive with practice stages and visitor experiences. From Tokyo: Hokuriku Shinkansen direct to Awara Onsen station in 3h 10min (since 2024).

あわら温泉は1883年、農夫が井戸を掘っていて温泉を掘り当てたのが始まり。10年で福井最大の温泉地に成長し、文人・政治家・軍人らが集う社交場に。現在も全国に5〜10ヶ所しかない「現役の芸者温泉」のひとつで、料亭での「お座敷遊び」（芸者の歌・踊り・お酌・会話）を体験できる稀有な場所です。コンパクトな温泉街に40軒以上の旅館・ホテルが並び、湯のまち広場の「伝統芸能館」では芸妓の稽古や変身体験ができます。東京から北陸新幹線でJR芦原温泉駅まで3時間10分の直通アクセス（2024年延伸）。

東尋坊の絶壁と日本海の夕日温泉

Mikuni Onsen lies just minutes from the famous Tojinbo cliffs — 1km of basalt columnar cliffs plunging 25m into the Sea of Japan, one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in all Japan and a designated National Natural Monument. Ryokan along the coast offer open-air baths with direct Sea of Japan sunset views. The historic Mikuni port (active since the 8th century) was a Hokuriku trading hub during the Edo era, and the town preserves wooden machiya streetscapes. The springs are sodium chloride type (typical of Sea of Japan coast). Combine Awara + Mikuni for the full Fukui coast experience.

三国温泉は名勝・東尋坊から徒歩圏に位置します——日本海に25m垂直に落ちる1kmの柱状節理の絶壁で、日本屈指の海岸景観として国指定天然記念物。海岸沿いの旅館は露天風呂から日本海の夕日を真正面に望みます。8世紀から続く北陸の交易港「三国湊」は江戸期に最盛、現在も木造町家の街並みが残ります。湯は日本海岸特有の塩化物泉。あわら+三国のセット訪問が定番。

Winter "Echizen-gani" snow crab + coastal cliffs

冬の越前ガニと越前海岸の絶景

The Echizen coast south of Mikuni is famed for "Echizen-gani" — the male snow crab from these waters, designated Imperial Household-quality and the only crab in Japan to wear an official yellow-tag of authenticity. The November 6 to March 20 catching season is the heart of Echizen Onsen culture: ryokan along the rocky coast offer "kani kaiseki" course meals with a whole crab per person, often with onsen baths overlooking the wild winter Sea of Japan. The coast itself is part of "Echizen-Kaga Coast Quasi-National Park." From Awara/Fukui: 1h by car along the coast.

越前海岸（三国の南）は「越前ガニ」の漁場として有名——皇室献上品の格付けを持つズワイガニのオスで、本物には黄色いタグが付く日本唯一の蟹ブランドです。11月6日〜3月20日の禁漁明けが越前温泉文化のピーク：岩礁海岸沿いの旅館は「カニ会席」（一人一杯丸ごと）を提供し、荒れた冬の日本海を露天から望むのが定番。海岸自体が「越前加賀海岸国定公園」。あわら・福井から海岸線をドライブで1時間。

Quiet Zen-temple onsen — 1244 founding of Soto Zen Buddhism

曹洞宗大本山永平寺の麓、禅の静寂温泉

Eiheiji Onsen sits 5 km from the gates of Eiheiji Temple — the great mountain monastery founded in 1244 by Zen master Dogen as the head temple of Japan's Soto Zen Buddhism, and one of the most spiritually-revered Buddhist sites in the country. Hundreds of monks still practice rigorous Zen discipline year-round. The onsen district itself is small and intentionally subdued — focused on day visitors making the temple pilgrimage and overnight guests seeking a contemplative bath after the visit. Authentic shojin-ryori (Buddhist vegetarian) cuisine is widely available. From Fukui Station: 30 min by Echizen Railway.

永平寺温泉は曹洞宗大本山「永平寺」（1244年道元禅師が開いた日本最高峰の禅寺）の門前から5kmに位置します。今も数百人の僧侶が厳しい禅修行に励む霊地。温泉地はあえて控えめに整備され、日帰り参拝客や宿泊で静謐を求める客向け。本格的な「精進料理」（仏教の野菜料理）を出す宿が多いのも特徴。福井駅からえちぜん鉄道で30分。

Five-Lakes scenery + ancient salt-fish "saba" route

三方五湖の絶景と若狭の鯖街道

The Wakasa coast in southern Fukui curves around Mihama Bay, famous for "Mikata Goko" — the Five Lakes of Mihama, each a different color and salinity (one freshwater, one brackish, one saltwater), creating a unique iridescent landscape from the surrounding hills. The Wakasa coast was the starting point of the "Saba Kaido" (mackerel highway) — chiefly from nearby Obama, salt-cured saba was rushed to Kyoto over Edo-era mountain trails. Coastal ryokan offer seafood-rich dinners (including the regional "yaki-saba" specialty) and views of the Five Lakes from open-air baths. From Tsuruga: 30 min by JR.

若狭海岸（福井南部）は三方湾に面し、名所「三方五湖」——5つの湖がそれぞれ異なる色と塩分濃度（淡水・汽水・海水）を持ち、周囲の高台から眺めると虹色のように映る独特の景観があります。若狭は「鯖街道」（江戸時代、塩漬けの鯖を京都に届けた山岳街道）の起点で（特に小浜が知られる）、地元グルメ「焼き鯖」が名物。海岸沿いの旅館は海鮮夕食と五湖を望む露天が定番。敦賀からJRで30分。
