01Dogo Onsen
Japan's Three Oldest" — 3,000 years + Soseki + a Ghibli inspiration
Dogo Onsen is one of "Japan's Three Oldest Onsen" (with Arima and Shirahama) and arguably the most culturally important onsen of all. The white heron origin legend dates back 3,000+ years; emperors Suiko (6th century), Tenji (7th century), and Crown Prince Shotoku Taishi are recorded to have visited. The crown jewel — Dogo Onsen Honkan, built 1894 — is a 3-story wooden bathhouse that is a designated national Important Cultural Property. It is widely said to have inspired the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" (2001), and was the setting where Natsume Soseki's teacher protagonist soaked daily in "Botchan." The bath complex includes "Kami-no-yu" (the everyday public bath) and "Yushinden" (a hall historically reserved for the Imperial Family). Modern Dogo has 25+ ryokan in a compact district reachable by the iconic single-line streetcar from JR Matsuyama.
